Subject: Rewatching Buffy: Checkpoint

Don't forget! Tonight at 8 pm we continue rewatching the entire series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with season 5, episode 12: "Checkpoint" and Angel with season 2, episode 12: "Blood Money."

Buffy swallows her pride and contacts the Watcher Council for help on the Glory situation (which begs the question: what have they been doing without a slayer to, you know, watch?) Meanwhile, on Angel, the return of Anne/Lily/Chanterelle and her homeless shelter (she's really done a lot in a year and a half.)

Hope you can stop by for the discussion, which continues here.

I liked this episode more than I remember I did. Though I have to say that Glory is scaring nobody. I've seen Clare Kramer in other things and she is MUCH better in those than she is here. I think it's just her interpretation of the character and the season suffers for it as a result.

The Knights of Byzantium FINALLY show up. Too bad they're a bunch of d-bags. Again, we're stymied by the fact that NOBODY actually wants to talk to ANYBODY ELSE. A lot of suffering could be avoided that way. It seemed to work for Buffy at the end of this one, didn't it? She finally faced down the Council and got her way.

Spoike does something nice for Buffy and he seems to be genuinely interested in doing it for the right reasons. Huh.

I really enjoyed the interview scenes with the Scoobies, et al. Spoike's interview in particular. "So, you've heard of me have you?"

And finally, "She's a god."

"Oh."

Checkpoint: A visit from the Watcher's Council. Quentin is always fun to watch. Note how he rides his attitude all the way to ALMOST getting Buffy back under the Council's authority.

The pressure on Buffy just keeps building in this episode. Travers. The Professor. Glory. The Knights. Ironically, all this piling on ultimately helps Buffy figure out what's really happening with the Council.

Like the little interview scenes. Willow/Tara always cute. Anya's elaborate fake biographical details. Xander being Xander.

Then there's Spike. Still trying to impress Buffy. Flattered by his bit of fame. And then being genuinely helpful.

(Note also more Spike-Joyce bonding.)

Dawn continues to be suspicious that secrets are being kept from her.

(And, of course, not just from her although she doesn't know this.)

And there are more indications that there's a connection between Ben and Glory. And a reminder that Glory has some sort of time limit.

And then there's Giles. Intimidated by Travers. Quietly fuming. And his expression near the end when Buffy calls Travers' bluff.

And we close on Quentin telling Buffy that Glory is a god.

Blood Money: More beige Angel. And we see Anne again and see the progress she's made. And we learn what the Senior Partners have planned for Angel--they want him on THEIR side.

Meanwhile, Cordy, Gunn, and Wesley are continuing to keep the agency going. They're even looking for new office space.
