I remember reading a (supposedly Japanese) saying, in the form of a riddle:

Question - Who should do a difficult task ?

Answer - The one who can.

Buffy believes that the Hellmouth MUST be guarded, for the safety of the world. She also believes that she is the best-qualified person for the job, possibly even the only qualified person. Although both of these beliefs may be wrong, she can't afford to assume that - because if they're correct, the consequences of inaction would be disastrous. Morally, she really doesn't have much choice.
