While I don't have indepth knowledge about folklore tales, it seems to me more about evil humans, i.e. the torture, the murders, the horror, that some humans are capable of. And it's the case that many people who do horrific acts are considered inherently evil by many - which to me, seems a neat way to absolve ourselves of any responsibility in having to do anything to prevent this evil. If someone is inherently evil, then how could we have ever done anything about it?

In the past, the emphasis would have been on the devil and his creations - darkness creating the monster that feeds on us and takes us over. Essentially an explanation for human weakness.

I think the depiction of vampires is more in that line, rather than a pedestal to place humans.
