Just my opinion - I think Connor definitely wanted to die. I can think of a couple of reasons why he might want Angel to do it: as a warrior, he wanted to die fighting; or he wanted to punish Angel by forcing him to kill his own son ( which is pretty crazy, but Connor was pretty crazy at the time).
