Subject: happy lincoln & darwin's 200th birthday!

I didn't realize till earlier this year that Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the same day--200 years ago! I was hoping to get to some kind of commemoration today, but even though that didn't work out, I can celebrate it w/a post, while it's still their birthday in Voy time!

It seems to me that, both of them being so prominent, they must have been aware of each other's existence. Don't know how to find out for sure, though. Lincoln did have an interest in science: he signed the act that established the National Academy of Sciences, & he was the only US president to hold a patent (for a method of buoying vessels through shallow waters), according to the group Science Writers in New York. I don't know how quickly the word spread of Darwin's work, but it's also 150 years since On the Origin of Species... was published. Lincoln died 6 years later & had plenty else to occupy his attention during that time. Still, who knows? Well, maybe someone does. Maybe even someone on this board!
