In that it would be serving one's own purposes, you're probably right about betrayal being the wrong word used here. But what I'm trying to highlight is a level of distrust between the protagonists despite their friendships, an acknowledgement of their capacity for both good and destructive behavior.

Its something more prominent on Angel, since from the very beginning any of his employees always prepared for the day he may revert to his more whimsical (read:evil) self, but it pops up on Buffy every now and again from Season 5 forward it seems.

On BtVS, it happens with Giles (doing that Watcher thing where they think they're making the "hard decisions"), for obvious reasons there's distrust between Wood and Spike, Dawn is leery temporarily of her sister because of MaybeJoyce appearing to her in Conversations With Dead People, all in example. I'm rather disappointed that there wasn't more distrust of Willow for her recently past actions in S7 as a whole, but that's another discussion.

I take it you weren't an Angel fan?
