There is a very interesting article in the book "Seven Seasons of Buffy" which basically states that although Willow is a wonderful character they way she is portrayed as a witch bears no relation to the way a real witch operates.

A lot of my friends are pagans and some do practice witchcraft it seems to be a part of a paganism from where I stand. Then again like paganism it appears to be a broad-brush term for a number of very old religious practices related to nature worship which do not necessarily have anything to do with each other. I mean is voodoo which is very different again witchcraft - discuss.

Again the point has been made that witchcraft was demonised by Christian zealots - both Catholic and Protestant over the years partially because of their own beliefs partly for political reasons. People are prone to hysteria and always in need of scapegoats today it's immigrants in the past it was witches.
