I remember an old Jules Feiffer cartoon - it ran for several panels & I don't remember it exactly, so I'll paraphrase what I do remember:

Setup - a grungy-looking old man is sitting in a rocking chair, nursing a beer.

" I saw ads on TV - use our shaving cream & attract women; use our toothpaste & be popular; wear our shirts & people will respect you. I figured I'd give it a shot."

" I changed my toothpaste, my haircream, my clothes - I bought all the stuff the ads said I should."

" I got a promotion at work. Pretty girls started following me around. Total strangers stopped me on the street & told me how great I looked."

" After about a week I changed back. I figured it that's the kind of guy people like, then to hell with them."
