True. And one actor may see that job very differently from another. I know that many of my customers (in the A/V business) see my job differently than I do. Some expect much more of me, and some expect much less. Depending which group I might intend to serve to their expectations, I could become either incompetent or exhausted.

No disagreement there. SMG has interacted with her fans to quite a fair degree. As fidhle notes below, she gave many interviews both in the written press and on TV shows during BtVS's time on the air.

Actually, she is. See fidhle's post below, where he notes quite accurately:

"Television and film, on the other hand, usually involve doing small scenes over and over until a satisfactory take is completed, and then moving on to the next scene to be filmed, which may have little to do with what is happening in the scene just filmed. "

This is a highly debatable point. If I am an author, it's my job to write the book. If I choose to promote it, I may do that personally, or by proxy using a agent or marketing firm. The choice is mine. Frankly, I don't owe readers a personal appearance or any other contact simply by virtue of writing the book anymore than if I am building a widget in a factory. Whether the "product" is purely practical or has an artistic component does not matter.

This seems logical on the face of things, but stop and think-- doing such is tantamount to admitting that "everything else I've done since is crap, so forget all that and remember how good I was before."

Wouldn't you find it devastating psychologically to think that you're already washed up before you're even in your 30's? That you've only ever done one good thing in your acting career?

Actors have ups and downs over the course of their careers. I might wish SMG had chosen better material to work with post-BtVS, but I'm not her. She can choose what she wants. I just go with the flow.

BTW, Woody Allen hasn't made a memorable film in years, but the advance word on his current release is first rate, so I'm going to check it out and see. Will it be the last great film he ever directs?

He ain't dead yet. Time will tell.
