Toshiba (head of the HD-DVD consortium) is offering a player for less than $500, which at the moment is a big advantage over the Blu-Ray camp, whose players are expected to be near a grand, at least initially. The players are also reverse compatible for standard DVDs, CDs, etc. While you can connect the player to a standard TV and see the disc in standard resolution, of course, you must have an HDTV to see the HD-level picture output.

As always, we will have to see if someone is able to crack the HD-DVD encryption system, which BTW is a "dynamic" system that can be updated if someone does manage to decrypt it. (Blu-Ray is the same.

However, a real world issue exists for all HD content on the web. Even compressed, the files are still huge-- we're talking multiple gigabytes. Even if you have a broadband connection, will the average user be willing to wait ridiculously long times for a download? I dunno, but I sure wouldn't.
