Very funny indeed. I do not think Joss has anything against wee or not so wee Irish folks. It is a just bit of ironic and somewhat self mocking humor. Deconstructing humor is always a bit of a risk (if you have to explain a joke…) but I think that a theme in the Buffyverse is the existence of a whole realm of vampires, demons, and oggly-booglies that are unknown to the straight population but that Buffy, Angel et al daily fight (and in Angel’s case even make a living fighting). But even they have to draw the line somewhere and they do not believe in Leprechauns. I find that hilarious. Kind of like Martha Stewart being a witch and Spiro Agnew being a demon (although these last two have a bit of political/cultural bite). That the joke is repeated is a wink to the careful fans of the series much like the dimensions with/without shrimp or the psychological implications of wanting to be a florist. All in good nature – no offense to the Irish intended.
