But Angel says in Innocence (S2 E26) that he must travel by cargo container since planes can't be assured to be light-proof. Which makes sense - planes would be a special hazard for vampires since they fly so high, that the tiny bit of protection that the atmosphere lends a vampire would be negated. Thus, rather than taking several seconds to burst into flame and dust, a vampire in a plane would dust in almost no time at all.

Cargo holds have a similar problem - a vampire can't be assured that the plane will land at night, and since planes have such a quick turnaround (the same plane can log 6 cities in a day), it would be a drunkard's walk to get to the proper destination. While smoldering is not the time to be lost in an unknown airport or on a jetway!

In contrast, a ship or a cargo container both have well assured lightless areas, snacks in the form of rodentiae, a precise schedule, long dock times (even the fastest turnaround for a cargo container ship is about 22 hours), the relative security (at least in the cargo ship) of being left alone since cargo containers are not disturbed in passage, and relative ease of entry - a stowaway on a cargo ship does not need a passport or visa. Nor a credit card and picture identification, such as are required to fly commercial carrier. (Just how does a Vampire get a driver's license and passport anyway? Since cameras rely on mirrors to function, they don't show up on film, do they?)
