A speculation:

Glorificus (Buffy) was part of a three-god (triumpherate) rulers.

Glory was in a hurry to complete the "ritual" with the key.

Note that Glory's attempt to "go home" occured just prior to Winnifred Burkle's return from Pylea.

I'm suggesting perhaps Illyria's return from The Deeper Well, was long prophisied (and Fred's banishment was an attempt to prevent or hinder Illyria's return via merging with Fred).

Even more interesting if Illyria turned out to be one of the other two God's that banished Glorificus in the first place. I'd say, lets ask Doc. But know one knows what happened to him after he got shoved off the Crazy Tower...\
