Probably many more comedies have had laugh tracks than not. I think there are many of us who remember unfunny comedies with heavy laugh tracks, often the louder the laugh track the worse the show has been. Laughter is supposed to be infectious, but it only works if it goes with something funny. Otherwise it's just annoying self-advertising. "Hey, everyone! This is really a riot!" The laugh track is somthing of a measure of much the show's producers have faith in a comedy. MASH was not all that popular early in it's run. In the beginning, it had a very loud laugh track compared to the dalogue. As it grew in popularity over the years, the laugh track became a lot more subtle. You can notice the same thing in the first few episodes of Friends for example. Once the producers were sure it was a hit, the laugh track became a lot less noticeable. I wouldn't worry about the laugh track if you like the show. Watch it and tell people you like it. The laugh track will eventually be taken care of.
