There are some great shows without them. But I wouldn't stop watching a show because it has one. The idea behind a laugh track isn't just to tell the viewer at home when they're supposed to laugh. It's meant to recreate the experience of being in a theatre, with an audience full of people. Laughter is infectious, and someone always laughs harder when with a group of people, all of whom are laughing, than alone. The laugh track tries to psychologically make you feel that others are laughing along with you, hoping to prompt bigger laughs, and by extension, good feelings about the show. I feel better about it when it's the actual laughter of a studio audience, such as with The Daily Show, but I don't think a show should necessarily be written off because of a laugh track.
