Subject: "Hope and music" spoilers Lost 2.1 Man of Science, Man of Faith (are they the same guy?)

The first episode centers on Jack, who has a problem with being more than just a man of science. At the hatch, Jack just wants to pack it all up and go back to the cave where it's comfortable, familiar. It's Locke and Kate who end up searching in the dark.

We meet Sarah, Jacks ex (from what he said before) wife. Sarah came into Jack's life on a gurney, half dead, a patient talking about having to dance at her wedding. Jack, ever the just the facts type of guy tells her in plain terms that she is screwed, tells that one to her fiance as well. Jack's father is the one who introduces Jack to the impossible idea of hope. Even when things are at their worst, hope is the one thing people can cling to and you never know, miracles may happen. Is hope just for sissies or children? Jack breaks from the Doctoring for Dummies rule book, ignoring the chapter on false hope, and tells Sarah that he will fix her. Her hope is stronger than his rational mind. And that takes him to the stadium where he runs into a fellow named Desmond (practicing for a race around the world), who was almost a doctor once. Jack tells this stranger about the promise he made that he felt he couldn't keep. Desmonds last words to him that day are..."see you in another life then".

Kate has Jack's number when she acknowledges that Jack doesn't even believe what he said to the rest at the caves about everything being alright. He's a half empty glass kinda guy, one that will go that extra bit. That bit that is not about hope as much as it is about fixing things himself.

When Jack went back (all smelly) to Sarah's room, he starts to tell her that he failed. She wants to know why he has taken up chain jerking. Her toes move, she can feel...eventually even go to the bathroom herself (I'd say Kevin is long gone and that's part of the reason Jack marries her). His tears give way to joy. A miracle happens, that time. Then he ended up on that island, lost.

Jack follows Locke and Kate down the shaft, into what looks like some lab. Funny that the music heard is "Make your own kind of music" by Mamma Cass.

Make Your Own Kind of Music
by Mama Cass
B.Mann and C.Weil

Nobody can tell ya There's only one song worth singing They may try and school ya 'Cause it hangs them up to see someone like you
You gotta make your own kind of music Sing your own special song Make your own kind music Even if nobody else sings along
You gotta make your own kind of music Sing your own special song Make your own kind music Even if nobody else sings along
And if you cannot take my hand If you must be going, I will understand
You gotta make your own kind of music Sing your own special song Make your own kind music Even if nobody else sings along
No no no no Even if nobody else sings along If nobody else sings along

Jack is the half empty, skeptical voice of what he considers the truth, the way things are. Now, Jack is Lost with some other types. Locke who has become the symbol of all Jack fears (now he just may have a good reason eventually with Locke) and has distain for, hope, even when you're screwed. Then we have the ending of episode one......Locke with a gun to his head, which Jack isn't so worried about. Then we see the man and the last word is YOU! It's Desmond, the almost doctor, who was going to race around the world.

Oh yeah, I didn't much mention anyone else, but what was (mirage?) Walt saying to Shannon?

Next week we see Desmond ask Locke "Are you Him"?

Season two.......yippie!!!!!!!
