In this episode Locke wasn't the only one we saw professing a belief that some form of destiny or fate was at work. Hurley also believes in fate, or at least in luck determined by the cosmos, but he views it as a negative force, one that they should try to get away from and certainly not go tinkering around with. Just because fate, God, or miracles exist doesn't mean they're there to help you; could be they're there to screw you over big time. That's something interesting to see in a crisis of faith on a TV show. Reason vs. Faith and Christianity vs. Atheism have been presented in movies and television many times, but it's pretty rare that Maltheism (the belief in an evil God or cosmic force) gets thrown into the mix. With all the focus on Jack vs. Locke, we must be careful not to forget the third side of the debate.
