What I want to know is who is the guy in the asylum who was repeating the numbers, dollars to donuts he may be connected to the island as well.

Then we have fate, belief, faith. Depending on the cards life has dealt you, you may fall into any of the three camps you mentioned. I bet Hurley feels trapped in a spiral that can never end well based upon his current experience, so why are so many trapped with him?

Hope is the one thing that we all cling to, even when all things point to the worst end result. When Jack checks Sarah after his tearful confession of failure, we see a Jack who wants to believe in something but who just can't figure out what that is. Every once in awhile something like "Sarah" happens to shake his belief or non-belief system. His father pointed out a simple thing and that is if you give people hope there is a chance that a miracle can happen, give them only the worst case scenario, that is how it plays out as they will feel as doomed as poor Hurley. What is clear is that some things happen that can't be explained in a rational way, this is something that keeps hope alive in people. I kinda think that science and faith have a partnership of a sort and I think that faith may be the thing that makes people try to better themselves be it scientifically or morally.
