Subject: SERENITY - TOTAL SPOILAGE!!!

I saw the first screening of Serenity in my town today (a 1 PM matine), and, dude, it was awesome. The action scenes were hard and intense, the comedy scenes were hilarious, and there was some real great drama going on. Now for some spoiler-icious comments:

* What the Alliance did to Miranda seems to have been inspired by Greek Mythology. According to the Ancient Greeks, when the world began, it was a paradise, and this was called the Golden Age. Problem is that everyone was so happy and content, they saw no need to bother with the exertion of having sex, so this perfect world only lasted one generation.

* The Reavers' origin seems inspired by the movie 28 Days Later, and it contains the same nagging problem: if the Reavers are so filled with psychotic rage, how come they don't try to kill each other?

* I loved it when Jayne was wondering how a person could become as violent as the Reavers, and then says "I mean, I'll kill a man in a fair fight . . . or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight . . . or if he bothers me, or if there's a woman, or if I'm getting paid . . . especially if I'm getting paid."

* River fighting the Reavers was terrific, perhaps the best fight scene in the movie, and it got me kind of wistful, thinking "this is what a big screen Buffy movie might look like."

* Loved the scene with Mal, Inara, and the Operative in the temple. "That's not incense," "I am wearing full body armor; I'm not a moron," "I didn't think you'd be stupid enough to come"/"Well, that makes you sort of a tease," "You can't make me mad"/"Spend an hour with him."

* I can kind of see why some reviewers thought this was a little too clearly based on a TV show given how status quo everything was at the end. There were a lot of big changes, but they're big by TV standards. Wash died, Booke died (though someone not familiar with the series wouldn't see that as a status quo change), Inara rejoined the ship, Simon and River's fugitive status is a bit fuzzier, and Simon and Kaylee got together. Most movies involve the characters' circumstances being changed a lot more by the end (take a look at Star Wars, where Luke's like isn't anywhere close to what it was before).

* "Fire at the Reavers. Fire at everybody. Somebody shoot!" LOL
