I'm with you, Rob. The Operative was not a man who enjoyed violence or causing pain. He would, but it was because he believed. Everything he did was for the Alliance. It was for Unity. Early was basically a sociopath who did what he did for profit and because he liked causing pain. For the Operative, nothing was ever personal--it was all for the Cause.

That was why, at the end, there was nothing left of him, as he stated to Mal.
