I was talking to someone this weekend who did just that for Star Wars...downloaded a pirated version of ep 3 then has pre-ordered the DVD. I know for sure I'll be getting a copy of Serenity on DVD, heaven knows when I'll get to the theatre.

I think that the movie industry is going to have to rethink how they consider the success of a movie should be based upon. Serenity is a lower budget movie that may seem to be making lower numbers than a Star Wars type of movie, but consider the sales in DVD and how that may make new fans out of folks with no access to theatres or who just don't go to theatres. I don't usually go because I have to wear ear plugs as the sound is over the top. Plus you can watch a DVD over and over again.
