I’m no box office expert, which is why I’m always quoting other people. I hope you don’t really have to choose between “Serenity” and food (though I respect your choice). If you can make matinee showings on weekends, they tend to be pretty cheap.

As for weekdays vs. weekends, the weekend is when most of the week’s money is made, so it’s what the studios pay the most attention to. However, every little bit helps and decent weekday sales may help convince theater managers not to drop the film just yet, so don’t feel like you aren’t contributing if you go to a weekday showing (the week between the first weekend and the second one brought in over $2 million dollars for “Serenity,” and that ain’t nothin’).

But since you (and no doubt many others) seem to be pretty much tapped out, there’s other things you can do help “Serenity.” Namely, recommend it to everyone you can. Friends, coworkers, casual acquaintances, anyone you have some kind of rapport with you should recommend the film to (and then check if they saw it; a number of folks I thought I’d talked into seeing it last weekend *didn’t* for various reasons--which is fine as long as they see it *this* weekend!). When recommending it, I suggest highlighting its sheer *quality* and downplaying your own fannishness to keep them from thinking your review is biased. You could also print out and post some guerrilla marketing on public message boards and other places (http://the11thhour.home.att.net is a good site for such posters). Getting *other* people to see the film may be much more important right now than spending money on it yourself (though if you feel you can, by all means do so!).

Finally, I too am not much of a theater-goer--too expensive and too many rude people. But “Serenity” is one hell of an exception!
