Virgil was halfway down the hall when he first heard the omnious buzzing from ahead. A few seconds later the source of the danger became clear, as the swarm of insectlike drones approached.
"Damn...here come's the welcoming commitee," he said quietly. They were small, difficlt to kill with "ordinary" weapons like lasers and swords, and probably envenomed with God-knew-what--and while Spade's grenade launcher might get them all, it puld probably blow the entire team to smithereens as well..Waitasec...
He thpought for a moment then smiled, slingng his rifle and stood there, arms slightly out and at his sides. He heard the singing within his mind as a shimmering Barrier of voiler-hued Kirlian force snapped down, sealing off the hall.
But Virgil wasn't finisned yet. Holding his hands out in front of him as if holding a giant, invisible beach ball, he began walking backwards--and as he did so, part of the wall followed him, creating a concave bulge about six feet deep. The "bugs", desperate to get at them, followed the shortest possible path to them by flying into the bulge--at wchich point Virgil snapped the bulge shut, creating an energy sphere with tapped the drones.
"Heh...compared to the mosquitos back home, these are nohing," he said aloud, part of him hoping that the man had heard him, as he concentrated again. Soon drips, then drabs, and finally rivulets of sweat poured from him as he contracted the sphere inward, attempting to crush the troublesome drones with one blow...
