BELFAST, Northern Ireland

Peter Robinson is expected to be elected next week to succeed Ian Paisley as leader of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government and the Democratic Unionists, according to their Protestant partyh.
In a statement Thursday, the Democratic Unionists said the election of Robinson as leader and senior party activist Nigel Dodds as deputy leader would not become active until 81-year-old Paisley "stands down as DUP leader."
The party said its 36 Northern Ireland Assembly members would meet Monday to elect Robinson and Dodds, and their expected approval would be followed by ratification from the party's wider executive on April 17.
Under the rules of power-sharing, the Democratic Unionists hold the right to the top post of "first minister," so Robinson would succeed Paisley in that position as well.
Paisley founded the Democratic Unionists in 1972 to thwart compromise in Northern Ireland. He has been first minister since May 2007, when he ended decades of stubbornness and formed a government alongside Catholics. It was a breakthrough for the province's Good Friday peace accord, which had its 10th anniversary Thursday.
Paisley announced last month he would retire in May following his hosting of an international investment conference in Belfast. Paisley was in Washington on Thursday seeking U.S. support for that May 7-9 conference.
Robinson, 59, has been deputy leader of the Democratic Unionists since 1980 and has represented Protestant east Belfast in British Parliament since 1979. He currently serves as finance minister in Northern Ireland's four-party coalition.
