SF: UPDATE: GERRY ADAMS VISITS NEW TREASURE ISLAND PARK, SITE OF GAELIC GAMES
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)

Irish political leader Gerry Adams, president of the political party Sinn Fein, paid a visit to San Francisco today, stopping at Treasure Island to celebrate the opening of a new sports field aimed at bring Gaelic sports and culture to youth in the Bay Area.
Park Na nGeal will open officially Dec. 7 for the San Francisco Gaelic Games, organizers said.
This afternoon, Adams took in the sprawling new 13-acre grassy field, against a panoramic backdrop of Marin County's Mount Tamalpais, the San Francisco skyline and the Peninsula bay shore coastline.
"What's happened here almost represents the spirit of the Gaelic Athletic Association," Adams said.
"I think that future generations will enjoy what you have done here," he said.
The Athletic Association leases the property from the city of San Francisco, and its volunteers transformed the formerly vacant dirt lot over the past half-year.
Adams also took time to discuss the political situation in Ireland.
"There has been progress made," he said, "there's much more progress to be made."
He called for more pragmatic leadership among Irish unionists, but added that he was confident that agreements between the unionists and republicans could be worked out.
"Our responsibility is to deliver, not just for the republicans, but for all the citizens," Adams said.
Adams is scheduled to speak a fundraiser at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel at 7:30 p.m.
