With more than 200 films playing at the 20th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, trying to pick out the brightest gems can be a daunting task.

From Jan. 6 to 19, film buffs will descend upon the desert, soaking up top-notch foreign films, American indies and documentaries like the winter sunshine.

To help find the best of the best, we asked for the help of the festival's six programmers(who each sit through 250 to 500 films just to make the selections for the festival) for their recommendations. For more information on the films and screening times, visit www.psilmfest.org.

'Hunger'

Visual artist Steve McQueen co-wrote this film and also makes his feature directorial debut with the last months of Bobby Sands. Sands, an Irish Republican, starved himself to death in Belfast's Maze Prison as a protest against the British government in 1981. It was also at the Cannes Film Festival and has a 17-minute-long single shot scene.

Helen du Toit, the festival's director of programming, said the film is minimalist and visually stunning.
