U.S. Sinn Fein backer changes stance

DUBLIN, Ireland- Sinn Fein's (shin faynz) leading congressional backer wants the Irish Republican Army to disband.
      New York Republican Peter King says the outlawed I-R-A is standing in the way of peace in Northern Ireland.
      King has been a supporter of the movement for more than 20 years. Now, he says I-R-A activities are derailing a possible power-sharing deal between between Catholics and Protestants.
      Sinn Fein is the political party affiliated with the I-R-A. It represents most Catholics in Northern Ireland. Ian Paisley's Democratic Unionists comprise the territory's major British Protestant party.
      King's remarks on Irish radio come as Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams is being barred from the annual St. Patrick's Day luncheon at the White House. Adams is in New York seeking support.
      The I-R-A has recently been accused of mounting the world's largest bank robbery, killing a Catholic man, intimidating witnesses and laundering money.
