N. Ireland militant released from prison

Johnny Adair, known as "Mad Dog," one-time leader of the outlawed Protestant paramilitary group the Ulster Defense Association, was released yesterday from a prison near Belfast, Northern Ireland, after serving two-thirds of a 16-year sentence for directing terrorism.

He was flown to Manchester, England, where his family is living, effectively in exile, and was met by an escort of British police. The Ulster Defense Association has threatened to kill him if he returns to Belfast, for his suspected role in the killing of a rival two years ago in an internal feud.
