Subject: Seaman on crippled Canadian sub dies (NYTimes)

IRELAND: SEAMAN ON CRIPPLED CANADIAN SUB DIES One of three injured crewman airlifted from a fire-damaged Canadian Navy submarine still drifting without power in heavy seas about 100 miles off the west coast of Ireland died in an Irish hospital. He had been suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and was picked up from the submarine, the Chicoutimi, by a British helicopter and flown to a hospital in Sligo, Ireland. The other two men were reported in stable condition. The submarine, bought secondhand from Britain, was on its maiden voyage to Canada on Tuesday, from Scotland, when an electrical fire forced it to the surface. Tyrone H. W. Pile, the commander of Canada's Atlantic Fleet, said damage to the Chicoutimi was more extensive than first thought. Yesterday a British frigate reached the submarine, and five other Royal Navy and towing vessels were expected on the scene soon. (Reuters)
