Guidant plans expansion of heart stent plant in Ireland

INDIANAPOLIS -- Guidant Corp. plans to expand its manufacturing of heart stents in Ireland, while moving forward with building a new $100 million plant.
The medical device maker will add 125,000 square feet of manufacturing space to its facility in Clonmel, Ireland, and add an expected 500 jobs over the next three years, the Irish trade ministry said Tuesday. The company could add 500 more jobs at the site in the future.
Indianapolis-based Guidant already has 1,000 employees in the Irish facility it opened in 1998.
The Clonmel operation will be involved in moving the company's new drug-coated heart stents from the research stage into production, Irish officials said.
Guidant still hopes to decide by the end of the year on where to manufacture the two drug-coated stents it expects to have on the market in 2006, company spokesman Steven Tragash said.
Guidant's board voted last month to spend more than $100 million to expand its existing production of the wire-mesh tubes used to prop open coronary arteries after surgery. It also is evaluating sites on which to build a new plant, Tragash said.
The new plant would cost $30 million to $50 million and have up to 2,000 workers, company officials have said.
