Irish Lawyers Call for Protests Against Bush Visit

DUBLIN (Reuters) - A group of leading Irish lawyers urged people on Monday to demonstrate against George W. Bush when he visits Ireland later this week, calling the U.S. president's trip an "election prop."

"The issue is that Bush is coming here to use Ireland as a photo opportunity for his re-election -- the Irish people need to do something about that," Giollaiosa O Lideadha, one of 176 lawyers who signed a "statement of objection" to Bush's Iraq policies, told reporters.

Traditionally, U.S. presidents are feted when in Ireland but the Iraq war and the Irish government's decision to allow U.S. military jets to refuel at Shannon airport have provoked strong opposition to Bush's stopover for an EU-U.S. summit on June 26.

A disparate group of political parties, pacifists, trade unions, artists and religious leaders are planning a series of demonstrations around Ireland this week culminating in a march from Dromoland Castle, venue for the summit in western Ireland, to Shannon airport on Saturday morning.

Organizers say they expect up to 50,000 people to take part in the protests.

Dublin was brought to a standstill last year when more than 100,000 people demonstrated against U.S. plans to invade Iraq.

Conscious of the 40 million North Americans who claim Irish ancestry, previous U.S. presidents have mingled with locals and supped pints of Guinness during trips to Ireland, but Bush, a firm teetotaller, is staying a mere 18 hours and does not plan any walkabouts.

The brief stopover will be Bush's first visit to the Irish Republic. The U.S. president visited the British-ruled province of Northern Ireland last year.
