I actually read this a few days ago, and only am just now getting around to posting about it. I've already discussed my somewhat lengthy feelings on the Dirty Pop MB so I'll spare everyone here lol. I agree with much of what he says, though.

Tom Petty Tees Off

With The Last DJ, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Tom Petty rails against mediocrity.

By David Peisner
CDNOW Contributing Writer

Tom Petty has long had a contentious relationship with the music industry. Back in 1981, Petty wrangled with his record company, who wanted to sell his latest album, Hard Promises, for $9.98, up a whole dollar from what was, previously, the going rate for albums (even threatening to name the album 8.98 to prevent the increase). Since then, he's consistently looked at the industry with a suspicious eye, this despite the astounding run of commercial success he and his band, the Heartbreakers, have put together over the past 25 years.

Their latest album, The Last DJ, doesn't break wildly from the jangly, guitar-rock they've built their empire on, as Petty offers up tales of evildoing by radio programmers ("The Last DJ"), concert promoters ("Money Becomes King"), and record execs ("Joe"). But he swears this isn't just another chance for him to bite the hand that feeds him. Petty sat down with CDNOW and explained what The Last DJ was really all about.

<b>CDNOW: One of the first things that jumps out about the new album is that you seem to be taking some whacks at the music industry. What have they done to piss you off? </b>

Tom Petty: I didn't want to do an album about the music industry, because it's too easy a target and, honestly, I don't think the music industry is much different than it ever was, except that it's bigger and more blatantly grotesque. It's always been pretty shaky. But I do think it works well as a metaphor for a lot of things going on, particularly in America, where money has become really, really important. I think a dangerous mindset has crept into our culture, this theory of, "What we want to do is make the most money possible, even if that means sacrificing the product or the quality of it."

I mean, I like music a little bit more than I like money. And I think it goes right on down the line to everything that's going on at the moment. It all seems to hinge on this quest for as much money as can possibly be made.

<b>Is this triumph of mediocrity bothering you more now than it did, say 5 or 10 years ago? </b>

It always kind of bothered me, but I think that I'm a little bit more shocked now by how far it's gone. Even just in music. You feel sorry for the audience, because the audience can only pick from what they're offered. I really love music; I love being in a rock-and-roll band, and I do think it's worth speaking up for, if only to let the audience know that you can really have better than you're accepting. But, one hopes that it will get better. We're going through change, and I'm not afraid of change. I think change is good.

<b>Are there new bands that excite you, though?</b>

There is a lot of great music; you've just gotta do a lot more work to find it. I think the White Stripes are kind of exciting and fresh. I mean, I don't know too many new bands that really have a track record. They only seem to get one record anymore. The [industry] doesn't seem to want to take the time to nurture them through a second or third one. I kind of miss that, too.

I think it has something to do with radio. We were lucky enough to come in as the last ones through the door on the great "classic rock" period. But I think radio started to change after that, and these people came in called "music programmers" that do all this research and base everything that's played on that. They take the power away from the disc jockey himself. When the radio reverted to stripped play lists and then started to just play oldies, it became hard for these groups to develop a relationship with the audience, like we had coming up.

<b>More than the criticisms, the new album seems to carry a nostalgia of sorts for days gone by. </b>

You're right. Just in general. Just for when everybody wasn't so mean. But overall, by the end of the record, I wanted it to be hopeful. I don't think there's much to be gained by just bitching. That's so boring to go, "Well, it was a lot better when I was young." It was, by the way [laughs], but it's really neither here nor there. We're not there now; we're here, and it's better to try and make now better.

<b>So how do you feel about rock and roll these days?</b>

I'm worried about rock and roll, in general, when I see people singing for the Gap and putting their songs in these awful commercials. Maybe it doesn't bother them or maybe they need the money or something. I don't know. I guess that the audience has gotten so complacent they don't even notice it anymore. So now you see these artists going, "Well, if the audience doesn't notice, I'm going for the dough." But I notice. [Laughs] I mean, I turn down a lot of money, all the time, to do that. And it fascinates me that nobody really gives a shit. But I'm not writing any songs to sell products. I really want them taken on a different level than that.

<b>Every time you turn on the TV now, there's another one, though. "London Calling" just appeared in a Jaguar ad. </b>

Well, now they try and feed you this stuff like, "This is the only way to try to get our music heard." Or, "This is the only way to have a hit record." But I'll tell you what -- if you want a hit record that bad, you should probably be doing something else. That's what's tearing it all down. These people who will do anything to have a hit record. They'll lose all dignity completely. I have constant rows with management, because I guess I'm not of that nature that I'll just do any fuckin' thing to have a hit record. I think it demeans the music, and I think it demeans this whole genre of music. I think it hurts everybody. It's just we, as the audience, should care more about the music than that. We should have a little more reverence than that.

So yesterday I was at my friends house we had a wedding to go to, our other friend was in the wedding so we had to watch her son.. I assume we were watching Nickeloden, I'm pretty sure that's what I turned on for him to watch, this commerical came on for a little head set Kareoke thing, and I then see Jamie Lynn singing "He Loves U Not" and her and some other girls are doing dance steps and everything..

It was kind of funny because it was just like watching Britney perform, and she sounds excatly like Britney.. It's crazy.

As he bounded into the skyscraper studio to talk about his first solo album, Justified, Justin Timberlake looked to be in high spirits when he warmed up the room with a brainteaser.

"A man lives on the 45th floor of a building," he began. "Every day when he goes to work, he gets in the elevator and hits 'lobby.' But when he comes home, he hits '15' and walks the rest of the way up. Why?" Smiling devilishly, Timberlake said the answer would be revealed after the interview was over.

Clean-shaven and bubbling with boyish charm, Timberlake looked as eager and excited as he was during his first American interviews with 'NSYNC over four years ago. He wore a black T-shirt under a red Pony warm-up jacket with the sleeves pulled up to his elbows, revealing a round black watch surrounded by diamonds on his left wrist and a blue and white wristband and diamond bracelet on his right. He joked with the producers and camera crew, repeatedly impersonating Dustin Hoffman's autistic character from "Rain Man" and smiled warmly as he greeted everyone on the location. Yet this is a newer, more experienced and more adventurous Justin, and his look and attitude belie the frustration, sexual discovery and personal growth he's experienced over the past year.

Not only did he end a three-year romance with Britney Spears, but he also stepped out from his multiplatinum pop group to record a racy, experimental dance album influenced by rap and '70s R&B. In the process, he demonstrated a new taste for authority by hiring P. Diddy to produce a track for the disc, then axing it — much to Puffy's dismay.

Judging from the pulsing beats, sensual vocals and suggestive lyrics of songs like "(And She Said) Take Me Now" and "Rock Your Body," it would be easy to assume the babyfaced singer had outgrown his squeaky-clean finery and wanted to slip into something more revealing. But while Timberlake agreed that the musical changes on Justified stemmed from personal experiences, he stressed that he wasn't consciously trying to conjure a new image.

"This record was probably the most organic experience I ever had in making music or being creative," he said, hands clasped in his lap. "It's definitely honest. This album is completely me. The lyrics are just the way I say things when I get into those moods that are described in the songs. It's just me on a platter, which is kind of scary."

So, what's in the Justin du jour? It's a tantalizing medley of palpable emotions, flavorful sensations and delectable sounds that chronicle Timberlake's mindframe from the time he and Britney split to the point where he started hitting the clubs and dating again.

"I went through some real changes while I was making this record," Justin explained, crossing his right leg over his left. "There's definitely a continuity there. To hear the person who started off and the person who finished, I hear two different people."

In simple terms, the person who started off was a frustrated and angry, devastated from an ugly breakup with a girl he thought he'd be with for the rest of his life.

NEW YORK — Offered her first peek at the new video from Christina Aguilera, Mashati Valez squinted into a small video screen perched on a Manhattan sidewalk and took in the pop star in all her "Dirrty" glory.

"My goodness, she's changed," Valez declared.

The New Yorker quickly and neatly summed up the reaction that most had after Aguilera's latest clip hit the airwaves on Monday. The David LaChapelle-directed video sees the young singer — clad in red panties, chaps and a bikini top — spar with a masked female boxer and writhe against an armload of female dancers while a shower drenches them all. And don't forget the cockfighting, mud wrestling, fire-eating, plushies, and female bodybuilding.

It's a far cry from the "Genie in a Bottle" who first emerged three years ago. "I just get really bored with sticking to the norm and having the proper conservative image. That's just so not me," Aguilera warned while her new album was taking shape. But steering clear of the norm seems to be turning off as many viewers as it's turning on.

"I think she's dirty," Minerva Materez observed. "She needs to go to church."

"She's trying to be like Britney Spears with all the guys dancing around her and being all slutty," Alex Castro said. "Seriously, she looks like a total ho ... She should just stick to what she was doing." Of course, one man's slut is another man's dream come true.

"She's practically wearing nothing, but I like it," Matthew Morris said.

"She seems cooler, more of a party girl now," Donald McCarver said. "That's hot."

Others were even more enthusiastic.

"Wow, that's my baby's mama right there," Floyd Allen said while watching the clip. "Boo, I'll eat your toes, officially."

So what kind of mood does Christina's latest clip put you in? Let us know in You Tell Us.

Did any of you catch JC on the WB show "What I Like About You?" (I think that's the name of the show.) It was on last Friday night. He was signing autographs at a record store and one of the female characters snuck away from her day at the spa with her sister to see him. She gets to the store and she's covered in mud (from a mud bath at the spa). She gives him a big hug, getting him all dirty, and he says, "I bet Justin doesn't have to do this." It was really cute - and he was adorable! I swear it should be illegal for anyone to be that cute!

And people said that this wasn't really planned for her to come on stage and sing, Linda kind of called her out to sing "Beautiful"

And here's the link, it's kind of low quality, when you can hear her really well, of course the damn clip has to end, but it still sounds like it's going to be a great song, and probably my favorite on the album.. http://connection.christina-aguilera.net/news.html

"I love her voice. It sounds like feathers." — Justin Timberlake on Janet Jackson

While Joey resurrects Broadway and Lance threatens to blast into space, Justin will have to be content with trying to change the face of pop music — again.

Justin Timberlake's debut solo record, Justified (November 12), is a broad, ambitious step from the clean, blissful pop of 'NSYNC. Timberlake's vocals still soar, but there's a lot more funk in his step and a number of R&B artists influencing his sound, including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Aaliyah and Missy Elliott.

"I wanted to do something new that was just completely me," he said. "I had been so personally drained from the past six months, and that made the emotion from the record much more real."

Studio hotshots the Neptunes and Timbaland split most of the production duties for the record, with Brian McKnight producing one song. Although P. Diddy and Mario Winans also collaborated with Timberlake, their contributions will not end up on the record.

The Neptunes and Timbaland's stamps are both indelible. The former's tracks are sinewy and seductive, filled with breathy spoken-word passages, propulsive pop energy and lots of melodic crooning, and the Timbaland cuts are packed with skittering beats, offbeat arrangements and a sensual dancefloor pulse.

Several guest vocalists also contributed to the sexy, eclectic vibe. As thrilled as he is about the cameos by Janet Jackson, Bubba Sparxxx and others, Timberlake stressed that they weren't coordinated to help sell records.

"All the collaborations happened in a completely organic way," he said. "I'm not a big fan of duets just for the sake of doing them. And I made sure the CD packaging didn't make it look like I was trying to cash in on somebody else's name."

The hottest collaboration on Justified is with Janet Jackson on "(And She Said) Take Me Now." The cut is easily the most sexually graphic song Timberlake has ever recorded, and Jackson's breathy vocals make the track sizzle with extra sensuality.

"I wrote the chorus from a girl's perspective," Timberlake explained, "and I just thought we should get a female on the part. Her name was the first that popped up in my head just because I love her voice. It sounds like feathers. I mean, she sounds like an angel. So I asked her, and she listened to the track and loved it. So we went in the studio, just me and her, and I produced the vocals."

Another collaboration came about by accident. Bubba Sparxxx, the first artist signed to Timbaland's Beat Club label, was hanging out in the studio with his producer when he came over to Timberlake to praise a beat in the song "Right for Me," and the two ended up jamming out.

"We were just two Southern boys vibing on each other, and it ended up being something cool," Timberlake said. "I thought, 'Man, it would be great if he was on it,' so I just asked him, and he went outside for about two hours, wrote a 16-bar rap and put it on the song. And I ended up writing a hook for a song that's probably going to end up on his next record, so we kind of did a tradeoff."

Timberlake also worked with relative unknowns on Justified, including Vanessa Marquis, who sings on "Rock Your Body" but currently has no record deal. Timberlake discovered her after hearing songs she had co-written with various producers.

"I just loved her voice," he said. "So me and Pharrell [Williams of the Neptunes] wrote a song that had an alternate girl's part that kind of talked off of the guy's part, and I thought, 'Why not give someone who's so eager an opportunity to shine?' I know you're going to hear from her, and if Pharrell doesn't sign her then he's a dummy. She's hot and she's beautiful."

The first song Timberlake recorded for Justified, "Like I Love You," wound up being the album's first single. Once again it was a collaboration, this time with alternative hip-hoppers Clipse, that gave the song a little something extra.

"There was never any question in my mind whether or not this should not be the first single," Timberlake said. "It sounded so original to me. And I kind of consider myself a new artist. This is a new beginning for me, so why call on some big-name hip-hop artist when I could get somebody that feels new so it could feel like we were chomping at the bit at the same time?"

Track list for Justified, according to Jive Records:
"Senorita"
"(Oh No) What You Got"
"Take It From Here"
"Cry Me a River"
"Rock Your Body"
"Nothin' Else"
"Like I Love You"
"Still in My Brain"
"(And She Said) Take Me Now"
"Right for Me"
"Lets Take a Ride"
"Never Again"

Justin was all over the radio this morning!

And I'm talking about urban stations. Of course, I don't have a tape recorder. Hopefully someone on JJB will get sound files and a transcript up.

The first stop was Hot 97 with Starr & Buck (well, just Starr). He was very funny! Someone's cell phone went off and he was like, Who's phone is ringing? I'm trying to do an interview here. That's just disrespect. He wasn't at all serious. Just very, very funny.

At one point Starr said, okay, I will spin your record 25 times a week if you answer one question. They went to commercial break and when they came back, Starr asked the question:

Have you eaten the coochie of Britney Spears?

Before y'all gasp at the question, Starr is like the black version of Howard Stern. Needless to say, I was on the floor.

Justin just kept saying, uh...uh... Then he was like, okay I'll answer if you up the spins to 30 a week. So Starr was like, okay. Justin continued to avoid the question but Starr kept answering him. So first Justin said, yes and no. And Starr was like, what you say? Justin repeated and Starr was like, what the hell is he talking about? Laughs in the studio.

So Starr asked again. And Justin was like, man, my mom is going to call me, I'm going to be in so much trouble. But Starr kept pressing and finally, he answered.

Yes.

I was on the floor. I could only imagine how flustered Justin must have looked at that point.

Anyway, that was the big thing. One more thing that I remembered. Starr said, if you are ever encountered by haters, you say to them, check the Soundscan, @#%$. And Justin was like, okay...Check the Soundscan.

Long pause.

@#%$.

The studio erupted. He was just so cute and I smiled for the entire time he was on (like 45 minutes, maybe a little less? They played a lot of music in between segments).

Anyway, he was also on Power 105 but I was on the subway when he was in the studio with them so I only caught the tail end of it. But Ed Lover was like, who is that back there. And of course it was Trace. So Ed told him to come to the mic and he asked how long Trace and Justin been friends and Trace was like forever. Then Ed was like, do y'all go to strip clubs and the answer from both of them was a resounding yes.

Evidentally, Ed, Dre, Justin and Trace are going to go to the strip club on Tuesday. And Justin is in town for the entire week.

Damn, that took a while to type up. Hopefully someone will get a transcript and the mp3 of the interviews up.

I watched some of the Latin Grammy's last night.

My first question is: why is the show in English?? Aren't all the songs in Spanish and the singers Spanish speaking. It was weird watching some people struggle with English when clearly their thoughts would have been expressed better in Spanish (i.e., Celia Cruz).

We're there even any awards given? Every time I turned, I saw performances. Thalia sucked. Why is she so popular?

And why Justin there? Okay, it's the same reason why *NSYNC performed two years ago. But what was Nick Carter doing there?

What's with Jamie Lynn (oh wait, I think she's just "Jamie" now) promoting All That?? Other than the Teen Choice Awards, and a segment on Nickelodeon, my mother told me she was on Regis and Kelly this morning (apparently, she's going to be in a Regis and Kelly like skit) and she's going to be on the Caroline Rea show tomorrow (why my mother knows this is beyond me). Of all the talented kids in the world who are struggling, she is the one that's famous-but only by association!! That sucks. But you know I gotta watch "All That" on Satuarday anyway >;)

Has anyone seen the Miller Lite commercial with Josh? I think it's Miller Lite. I don't know. But I do know Josh is in a beer commercial. I don't know what it's about because I was on the phone when I saw it, but I know it's funny. All those commercials are hella-funny.

I'm leafing through US Magazine and there is a little feature for Lance, asking Celeb's what they think Lance could do..

-Mark McGrath: <i>"All he has to do is a one-month tour, and he can generate 20 million bucks. We'll see... You know those N Sync boys can do anything.."</i>

-Simon Rex:<i>"I'll put $5 in on it.."</i>

-Tatyana Ali:<i>"Lance should have a live concert in space."</i>

-Robert Iler:<i>"He should have a yard sale and sell all of the N Sync clothes."</i>

-Comedian Jeffrey Ross:<i>"He should sell Justin Timberlake on Ebay. I'm sure he could get that much. I think they should send Bobby Brown into space though, so the could call Whitney and say 'Houston we have a problem.'"</i>

Shuttle Diplomacy

Lance Bass' backers insist he'll still blast off. A reported Pepsi sponsorship deal, and lots of last-minute training, could still put the 'N Sync singer into orbit by Gary Susman

The Lance Bass space saga has had more twists and reversals than the choreography in an 'N Sync video. It seemed the matter was finally put to rest last week when the Russian space agency sent a letter to NASA and its other partners, saying that it could no longer wait for Bass' backers to cough up $20 million for his shuttle seat, and since it was too late to train another cosmonaut, it would be sending a cargo container aboard the shuttle to the International Space Station in Bass' place. But now, less than six weeks before the Oct. 28 launch, Bass' backers are telling MTV that the 'N Sync singer really will blast off, thanks to a last-minute sponsorship deal, and that he'll be back in training at the Star City, Russia space center as early as today.

Bass' flight was to be documented in a reality miniseries called ''Celebrity Mission: Lance Bass,'' whose sponsors were to pay the cost of the flight. In recent weeks, as the show's producer, David Krieff, missed deadline after deadline to pay the Russians, he insisted that he had the money and that paperwork snafus on the Russians' part were to blame for the delays. Now, a source close to the project tells MTV that the money is on its way, thanks to Pepsi. Although the soft drink bottler hasn't confirmed the deal, the source says the company will spend $35 million in marketing, including partial funding of Bass' flight.

According to MTV, Krieff's Destiny Productions wants to make Bass' flight the prelude to a reality game show called ''Big Mission,'' which would send winning civilian contestants into space. ''Survivor'' producer Mark Burnett is reportedly working on a similar show, called ''Destination Space,'' in which contestants would train at Star City, while former astronauts and space experts would vote one contestant off each week.

To make up for the 10 days of training he's missed, Bass is reportedly going to work 16-hour days and weekends. And if he's still not ready, there's another shuttle flight in April with an empty seat. ''Lance will be going to space,'' MTV's source said. ''Nothing has changed, other than that if we can't come to terms for the October flight, it'll be April instead.''

Christina Aguilera Returns, Her Image Remade
By KELEFA SANNEH

It's been three years since Christina Aguilera released her first album, a self-titled disc that sold eight million copies. The album established her as a teen-pop star, a first-rate diva, a sex symbol and, acording to one list, one of the country's worst dressed celebrities. She insists that the long wait for the follow-up album may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. "I wanted to get out of the spotlight and let people forget a little bit of the old image," she said.

She didn't completely disappear. There was a holiday collection called "My Kind of Christmas," a Spanish-language album called "Mi Reflejo" and a hugely popular single called "Lady Marmalade." Still, Ms. Aguilera says that her new album, "Stripped" (RCA), due out Oct. 29, might surprise her fans — and, for that matter, her detractors. Songs likely to make the final cut include "Can't Hold Us Down," which seems to respond to Eminem's taunts about her sex life, and "I'm O.K.," about wife beating; the first single is "Dirrty," with the rapper Redman.

"The whole vision for this record was to be really raw and real," Ms. Aguilera said, speaking by telephone from Los Angeles. "Just really baring who I really am."

Jane, a mischievous magazine aimed at young women, calls this technique a makeunder — the opposite of a makeover. Every month, the magazine finds a subject and convinces her to wear less makeup and let down her hair. Of course, achieving this new look often requires more sophisticated makeup, a high-maintenance haircut and a battalion of stylists. The subjects learn the same thing Ms. Aguilera is learning: that becoming yourself can be hard work.

Right now, it's makeunder season in pop music. The young singers who rose to fame during the teen-pop boom are scrambling to stay relevant. This fall, 'N Sync's lead singer, Justin Timberlake, is to release a solo album that eschews electronic sounds in favor of live instruments. On her most recent album, "Missundaztood," Pink transformed herself into a rock 'n' roll rebel, singing about family strife and railing against her enemies. Even Britney Spears seems determined to come clean; she recently declared, "Until about a year ago I was trying to fit an image and trying to be someone I wasn't."

Of all these makeunders, Ms. Aguilera's might be the most risky — after such a long absence, she has the most to lose. But Bob Jamieson, chairman of the RCA Music Group, insists he isn't worried. "She has tremendous instinct about who she is," he said. "Artists like Christina are going to be right more than they're going to be wrong."

Ms. Aguilera, 21, spent much of her childhood in Wexford, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh. When she was 5, her father, an Ecuador-born Army sergeant named Fausto Aguilera, separated from her mother, Shelly Kearns, a former Spanish translator. (Ms. Kearns remarried in 1992; Ms. Aguilera has a sister, a half-brother, a stepbrother and a stepsister.)

For a time afterward, Ms. Aguilera's life was pretty normal — normal, that is, compared with other teen-pop stars' lives. There were competitions and recitals and auditions; at 12, she earned a spot on "The New Mickey Mouse Club," alongside Ms. Spears and Mr. Timberlake.

Her breakthrough hit was "Reflection," a dreadful ballad from the Disney movie "Mulan," and Ms. Aguilera became a star with "Genie in a Bottle" and "What a Girl Wants," from her debut album — two of the most successful teen-pop singles, and two of the best. The tracks were fast and jittery, and her voice had surprising strength and range; she seemed equally influenced by Ms. Spears, Destiny's Child and Mariah Carey.

With "Mi Reflejo," which consisted largely of Spanish-language versions of songs from her debut album, Ms. Aguilera affiliated herself with the Latin pop upsurge. (She isn't fluent in Spanish, so she learned the lyrics phonetically.) Then, with "Lady Marmalade" — a collaboration with Pink, the R & B singer Mya and the rapper Lil' Kim — Ms. Aguilera received a different kind of makeunder: the video was inspired by "Moulin Rouge," and so were the outfits.

During much of this time, Ms. Aguilera was traveling the world on a marathon tour that she now describes as "hellish." When it was over, she settled in Los Angeles with her boyfriend — "now ex-boyfriend" — and started thinking about a new album. She knew she wanted to move away from her old sound and her "super-clean, cookie-cutter" image.

For any pop star, especially a former teen-pop icon, individualism is a team sport. Like her first album, "Stripped" was created by committee; the difference is that this time, she says, she's running the committee. She helped write the songs and choose the producers, and anyone with old-fashioned ideas about what the album should sound like was quickly left behind. "Certain people didn't get it, and that's why they didn't get songs on the record," she said.

To sound more like herself, Ms. Aguilera emulated her favorite singers. She fearlessly turns names into adjectives — one song has "a Jillscotty vibe," while another is "almost Johnlennony." For "Fighter," with the guest guitarist Dave Navarro, she says she tried to evoke the feeling of "November Rain" by Guns 'n' Roses.

The most brazen example of this strategy is "Dirrty," the collaboration with Redman. If it sounds a bit like the recent Redman hit "Let's Get Dirty (I Can't Get in Da Club)," that's no coincidence. Ms. Aguilera says she called Rockwilder, who produced "Let's Get Dirty," and told him how much she liked the beat. "He made me a track that was very similar," she said. "I almost thought it was too similar." Then she decided to play up the similarity: she brought in Redman, who delivered a rap that made reference to "Let's Get Dirty" — he even recreated the ape sounds he had made on the original track.

It seems that Ms. Aguilera's biggest influence is one of her contemporaries. Pink was never as popular as Ms. Spears or Ms. Aguilera, but with "Missundaztood," she gave herself an appealing new sound and an appealing new persona — and those are the two things that every former teen-pop star wants.

Ms. Aguilera admits to being inspired by "Missundaztood." She was particularly impressed by one of Pink's songwriters. "I wasn't a big fan of the Dallas Austin songs, but I really, really loved the Linda Perry songs," she said. "They had a really personal, real sense about them."

So she did what any ambitious singer would do: she called up Ms. Perry (formerly of the group 4 Non Blondes) and arranged a studio session. "We just clicked," Ms. Aguilera recalled, and Ms. Perry wrote a number of new songs with her.

Ms. Aguilera's collaboration with Redman links her to Eminem, who has mocked her in his songs by speculating recklessly about her sex life. Two years ago, he teamed up with Redman for a song called "Off the Wall," in which Eminem raps, "Causin' terror to Christina Aguilera/ When I grab her by the hair and drag her across the Sahara."

Although Ms. Aguilera says she and Redman never discussed "Off the Wall," she apparently hasn't forgotten Eminem's attacks. Don't be surprised if much of the discussion about "Stripped" centers on "Can't Hold Us Down," a feminist anthem sung to a hip-hop beat. "Should I be quiet just because I'm a woman?" she asks, and then she berates an unnamed man: "It's sad you only get your name through controversy." Soon, the grudge match has escalated into a battle of the sexes. "The guy gets all the glory, the more he can score/ But the girl do the same thing, you call her a @#%$," she sings.

It's a thrill to hear Ms. Aguilera sounding so indignant. The main problem with her first album was that her tough, virtuosic delivery often didn't match the meek songs she was singing — she didn't really seem like a hopeless romantic, searching "for a love to keep me safe and warm." The new material is more promising because she has vowed to keep the vocal theatrics to a minimum — "It's so not a diva kind of record," she said — while singing songs that hint at a more petulant personality.

This new attitude allows her to experiment with different genres: she has recorded a bluesy duet with Alicia Keys and a terrific rock 'n' roll-inspired track in which she runs her voice through a wah-wah pedal. Like her contemporaries, Ms. Aguilera is going to great lengths to reinvent herself — and not a moment too soon.

Of course, Ms. Aguilera is trying to give her listeners a pleasant surprise, not a nasty shock. The goal is to preserve the catchy tunes and the brassy voice while making the songs a little less sugary. It's a difficult task, but not an impossible one. You might even argue that she has already succeeded, on a track called "A Stroke of Genius," although it was created without her knowledge.

"A Stoke of Genius" turned up on the Internet late last year, credited to a producer known as Freelance Hellraiser. It starts with a taut guitar line and a brisk beat from "Hard to Explain" by the Strokes. Then a strong, beseeching voice sings, "I feel like I've been locked up tight for a century of lonely nights" — it's Ms. Aguilera singing "Genie in a Bottle." As the spliced-together song goes on, the Strokes' anxious beat makes a teen-pop classic sound like an ode to sexual entrapment. It's still sweet, but now you can taste the alcohol, too.

When asked what she thought of "A Stroke of Genius," Ms. Aguilera paused for a moment and then laughed. "I really, really loved it," she said. "I thought it was dope." And then, only half-joking: "That should have been how I came out with it in the first place!"

See if you can figure these out.

If a father bull drinks 4 gallons of water a day and a baby bull drinks 2 gallons of water, how many gallons of water does a mother bull drink a day?

I have a face, two arms, and two hands, yet I can not move. I count to twelve, yet I can not speak. I can still tell you something everyday.

Give me a quick "off-the-top-of-your-head" answer to this:
How many second's are there in a calendar year?

If you were running a race, and you passed the person in 2nd place, what place would you be in now?

Tommy's mom has three sons. The youngest son is named "Nickel". The middle son is named "Dime". What is the name of the oldest son?

You are a bus driver. At the first stop, 4 people get on. At the second stop, 8 people get on. At the third stop, 2 people get off, and at the last stop, everyone gets off. The question is: What color are the bus drivers eyes?

If a rooster laid a brown egg and a white egg, what kind of chicks would hatch?

In what year did Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall in the same year?

You enter a dark room. You have only one match. There is an oil lamp, a furnace, and a stove in the room. Which would you light first?

This one's a toughy:
A man walks up to you and says - "everything I say to you is a lie." Is he telling you the truth or is he lying?

Justin Timberlake Fan Killed In Alleged Hit-And-Run Outside Radio Station

A 21-year-old Justin Timberlake fan hoping to catch a glimpse of the 'NSYNC singer outside a Burbank, California, radio station Monday night was killed in an alleged hit-and-run.

The woman, Burbank resident Anne White, was struck by a truck driven by Cameron Duty, 23, who purportedly had an argument with someone in the crowd before deliberately backing onto the sidewalk where dozens of fans were gathered.

"[White] had apparently been on the sidewalk when the truck, traveling in reverse at a high rate of speed, struck her and pinned her under the vehicle," Burbank Lt. Tim Stehr said in a statement.

The driver fled the scene but was later arrested and faces charges of murder, hit-and-run and drunk driving. His bail was set at $1 million and he will be arraigned at the Burbank Court on Wednesday.

Timberlake, who was inside the KIIS-FM studios promoting his upcoming solo album, issued a statement on Tuesday (September 10) to address the incident.

"I am horrified to learn of the senseless death outside KIIS-FM last evening, and my family and I wish to express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim," Timberlake said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with you."

Representatives for the pop star have been in contact with Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes Against Drunk Driving and will soon announce a partnership Timberlake will undertake with RADD to raise awareness of the horrors of drunk driving.

KIIS-FM also released a statement Tuesday: "KIIS FM extends its sympathy to the victim's family for their loss. We fully support the police in their investigation of this unfortunate accident."

<b>Lance Bass Space Trip Officially Off
Mon Sep 9, 3:54 PM ET
By MARCIA DUNN, AP Aerospace Writer</b>

<i>CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - Pop star Lance Bass' dreams of going into space have officially gone "pop!"

The Russian Space Agency notified NASA ( news - web sites) on Monday that the 'N Sync ( news - web sites) singer won't fly to the international space station ( news - web sites) next month.

Bass had hoped to rocket away from Kazakhstan on Oct. 28, boosted by corporate sponsors and a seven-part television documentary. But TV producers failed to raise the estimated $20 million fare, and Russian space officials last week kicked Bass off the upcoming crew.

Bass' supporters contended the decision was not final and that negotiations were continuing, but Monday's letter to NASA formalized the matter.

"The letter speaks for itself," said NASA spokeswoman Debra Rahn. "They've officially withdrawn Mr. Bass from the flight."

The letter from Russia's director of human space flight was dated Friday and faxed Monday to Frederick Gregory, NASA's deputy administrator and chairman of the board that was reviewing Bass' bid to fly to space. NASA promptly forwarded copies of the letter to the other space agencies involved in the station program, namely Canada, Europe and Japan.

Rahn said Russia's M.V. Sinelshchikov thanked Gregory and other space station officials for reviewing Bass' proposal to fly to the orbiting outpost. But he noted that the Russian Space Agency could wait no longer for the contractual obligations to be met, she said.

The singer's publicist, Jill Fritzo, was not immediately available for comment.

Just two weeks ago, Bass and the two men with whom he was to be launched spent a full week training at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The celebrity posed for pictures with astronauts and other space program workers and took part in an Internet chat with school children.

At 23, Bass would have been the youngest person ever in space. He also would have been the third paying space tourist.

"We appreciated his education outreach activities while he was there," Rahn said. She added that NASA had no comment on Bass' removal from Russia's Soyuz crew. "It was a business decision in which NASA had no part."

With the launch of the Soyuz rocket just seven weeks away, there's not enough time to put anyone else on board. Russian space officials previously indicated that a cargo container weighing the same as Bass would replace the singer once the deal was off.

While at Houston, Bass said he was confident everything eventually would work out. But if he couldn't travel this fall, he told reporters, "I would work my butt off trying to go for another mission." </i>

Okay, so is it a surprise that Kelly has this constest all wrapped up?? IMO, Kelly has a great voice, there's no doubt about that, but that's all she has. Justin as a soothing voice with incredible range. But in contrast to Kelly, he knows how to work the audience and the stage. Not to metion, he's just so darn cute.

So I want Justin to win. And I voted for him last night. I'm not exactly sure how many times I voted; I lost count at 16.

But whoever wins deserves it. They're both incredibly talented (although I think Tamyra should also be in there somewhere). But what I like is the fact that Justin and Kelly seem so humble and appreciative (unlike some other celebs who start to believe their own hype), it makes me want them to be successful win or lose.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's space agency has scrapped 'N Sync ( news - web sites) singer Lance Bass's plans to join an October space mission after the U.S. pop star failed to meet payment deadlines, a spokesman for the agency said on Tuesday.

Bass, 23, who would have become the youngest person ever in space, has been told to leave Russia's Star City cosmonaut training center outside Moscow, where he had been preparing to join a mission to the International Space Station.
"After failing to fulfil the conditions of his contract, Lance Bass has been told that his training at the Cosmonaut Training Center has ended and that his flight to the ISS is impossible," spokesman Sergei Gorbunov told Reuters.

"We are preparing to send a cargo container to the ISS instead of a third crew member." He added: "Bass is now at Star City, gathering his stuff and preparing to leave."

Bass, backed by a consortium of companies rounded up by a Hollywood producer, had already missed initial deadlines to come up with a reported $20 million. U.S. space authorities had also expressed worries that the star was ill-prepared for the flight, though cash-strapped Russia said it needed the fee to service its fleet of Soyuz craft.

He would have been the third space enthusiast to pay his way into space after U.S. millionaire Dennis Tito and South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth.

The October Soyuz taxi mission will now go ahead with Russian commander Sergei Zalyotin and Belgian flight engineer Frank DeWinne.

Excerpts from MTV.com

Even Eminem loosened up a bit. The night's big winner may have let Slim Shady come out onstage, threatening to punch Moby while accepting the Best Male Video honor, but backstage he was just plain ol' Marshall Mathers, seemingly squashing any beef he had with another person he blasted on wax. Walking out of sight of the audience and cameras, Eminem was engaging in a spirited conversation with award presenter Christina Aguilera that at initial glance could have easily been construed as an argument. However, once the rapper said his peace and Christina voiced on her opinions, Em, who was nodding his head and looked to be agreeing with the singer, opened his arms just as she was about to walk away and the two actually briefly embraced.

"Now that's an MTV moment," exclaimed an applauding Brandy as she stood off to the side next to Darrin Dewitt Henson of the booty-shaking how-to home video "Darrin's Dance Grooves" and the cable TV show "Soul Food."

"I'm cool, it's cool," Eminem, who was immune to the boo birds he heard onstage, said seconds later to his manager Paul Rosenburg, who was offering words of encouragement.

Earlier, Aguilera sat in a dressing room along with Brandy as they both got their makeup done. Before Aguilera went out in front of the crowd at Radio City, she was more concerned with making jokes with her friend and sending messages on her 2way pager than exchanging pleasantries with Usher, who was standing at arm's length. Usher had some fun later on with Jennifer Lopez, however.

Justin Timberlake had to wait until later on in the night to celebrate his first-ever solo performance. He had to change shirts and present the Viewer's Choice Award only a few moments after his routine.

He did receive the stamp of approval from his fellow 'NSYNCers, who watched J.T.'s performance on a monitor. Chris Kirkpatrick played air guitar as if he were a part of the band and Joey Fatone smiled during a few spots in the set, telling his friends, "That was real cool," as the music came to an end.

Every year I am a little disappointed in the MTV awards show.

I'm not sure if I am superficially buying into the hype or just disillusioned. Either way, I think the VMAs this year was way TOO all over the place. I'm all for diversity in music, but there is such a thing as too much diversity. Bruce Springstein, Eminem, P. Diddy, Pink (oh...sorry...P!nk, lol) Guns N Roses and Justin Timberlake all sharing in the entertainment value do not bring an audience together but segregate them more. It's like an anti-pop revolution. I find myself not liking ANYTHING that I'm hearing (although, little Justin did quite well). And I know that every is just thrilled beyond belief over the Guns N Roses reunion, but let's be realistic...4% of the MTV-viewing audience can relate to that "time period"--I am not one of them. So, MTV, go with rap, go with R&B, go with grunge, go with Beatles-esque 80s bands or go with pop-wannabes...but just pick three. Not twenty.

Merely my feeble-minded opinion.

Other thoughts:

Christina, you looked horrid. It makes me not want to buy your album.

Was Justin TRYING to be Michael Jackson on purpose?

No Doubt is considered pop?

Jimmy Fallon is hot but wears too much blush.

Vote for Kelly Clarkson.

Oneartist.com? Huh?

Mary Kate and Ashley Olson? Are they BREAKING into the music scene?

Was I the only one scared of the bouncing, flipping P. Diddy people?

Must we ALL share how much we drank when receiving an award?

Is Brandy nursing?

Did anyone understand a single word Sheryl Crowe was singing?

HOW COULD JOHN MAYER NOT WIN BEST NEW ARTIST??????????????

UGHHHHH!

Okay, I'm through. Damn the record companies for throwing away my resume...

While his fellow 'N Sync mate Lance Bass prepares to soar into space, Justin Timberlake becomes the first member of the boy band to step out on his own and he scores the Hot 100's top debut for his efforts. Produced by the ubiquitous Neptunes, Timberlake's single "Like I Love You" arrives at No. 67. The track was released to radio just last week to herald the Nov. 12 release of his solo Jive debut album, "Justified." Look for Timberlake to perform the new track tonight (Aug. 29) during the MTV Music Video Awards.

Excerpt from an interview with Avril Lavigne (Chartattack.com)

Just don't expect her to be another Britney Spears. "I mean, the way she dresses — would you walk around the street in a f***in' bra?" she asks rhetorically. "I'm not trying to dis anyone, but with me, the clothes I wear onstage are the clothes I would wear to school or go shopping. I'm not gonna go up onstage and dress different. Britney Spears goes up onstage and dresses like a showgirl. She's not being herself up there because she's dancing like a ho. Is she ho? She says she's a virgin. Y'know, it's just not clicking. She's doing one thing and saying another thing, y'know? It's definitely not what I'm going to do."

MTV.com

Justin Timberlake drops some serious pick up lines on a track that's scheduled to arrive when his upcoming solo album, Justified, hits stores on November 12... as if the single 'NSYNCer really needs them.

"Girls are going to fall in love with that song," said the Neptunes' Chad Hugo, who, with partner Pharrell Williams, recorded "Take It From Here" and six other songs intended for Justified. "It's got this great string section on it, and I think girls should be checking for some of those pick-up lines. Guys are definitely going to steal some of them."

So, if a dude walks up and says something like, "I want to be the lighthouse when you get lost/ 'Cuz I'll shine my light to help you across," you can thank Justin before you lay the smack down.

As previously reported, Timbaland, P. Diddy and Mario Winans helped produce the album and singer Brian McKnight makes a cameo. Timberlake co-wrote all the songs on the album.

A spokesperson for Timberlake could not confirm how many Neptunes productions will appear on the album.

If all of that works out, it should fit the tone of the tracks the Neptunes recorded with Timberlake, according to Hugo.

"We picked him up right after he checked into his hotel. We drove around in the car listening to old Earth, Wind & Fire albums, and he was totally with it," Hugo said. "The background of those songs is the feeling we wanted to incorporate into the music. He was like, 'Nobody's ever heard anything like that before ... a white boy singing this kind of music.' He didn't care what people would say."

Hugo said that while the Neptunes aren't into sampling songs, they spent hours listening to a pair of classic Michael Jackson albums for inspiration during their sessions with Timberlake. "We listened to Off the Wall and Thriller a bunch of times to really get the feel of them and create something that's not a sample, but similar to those songs without recycling them," Hugo said. "We just wanted to re-create that sense of those timeless, classic songs, without any of the 'bling, bling, hit me on my two-way' style of the new R&B. It has elements of the old and the new."

A perfect example is the song Hugo said is slated to be the first single, "Like I Love You." The track mixes Timberlake's classic soul vocals with verses from Neptunes protégés, the Clipse.

"He's a really hard worker," Hugo said of Timberlake. "He would stay up late every night just to finish up backing vocals. I think people want to put him in a box, a boy band box, or an 'NSYNC box, but he's not like that. He's a real individual and a dope vocalist."

Among the other tracks Hugo said he expects to make the album is the "hot" mid-tempo song "Señorita," which he said was not quite salsa but definitely spicy.

Though he wouldn't divulge whether any of the songs the Neptunes worked on with Timberlake directly acknowledged the singer's recent breakup with Britney Spears, Hugo said fans will likely read what they want to into some of the lyrics. "There could be songs about that," he said. "Everyone incorporates their personal lives into their songs."

The duo just recorded two songs with Snoop Dogg for his upcoming solo record: the improbably titled "Snoop Dogg" and a track called "Beautiful," which features the Gap Band's Charlie Wilson. They also tracked time with R&B group 702 and expect to go into the studio soon with J. Lo to work on songs for her next album.

From People

Britney's Big Break

Pop's princess takes a breather and talks about the big breakup, her parents' divorce and the girl she left behind.

Britney Spears has a scraped knee, and she has Brad Pitt to thank for it. On the prowl for some excitement one recent afternoon, the 20-year-old pop singer bought a star map of L.A. celebrity homes. Soon she and a girlfriend were parked outside the Beverly Hills mansion Pitt shares with wife Jennifer Aniston. "I stood on top of my car, trying to see in," says Spears, who fell off when she spotted the resident hunk in the driveway. "I busted my knee open. I felt like the biggest dumbass ever." Did Pitt see her? "No, and thank you, God," she says with a laugh. "I would've been so humiliated."

If Spears sounds like a bored young woman with plenty of time on her well-manicured hands, she admits as much. "I honestly don't know what to do with myself," she says. Which is just what she had hoped for in announcing an indefinite hiatus from recording and performing beginning this month. Of course, that won't prevent her from reading film scripts and appearing Aug. 29 on MTV's Video Music Awards. Still, says Spears, "I need this break to rejuvenate spiritually and to just play."

She may have playtime in mind, but tabloid editors are working overtime on Britney breakdown stories. Following her parents' divorce in May, her split from 'N Sync heartthrob Justin Timberlake in March, sliding record sales and a spate of public relations disasters from London to Mexico, she remains genuinely mystified by the public impression that she's imploding. "I'm taking a break, so people are writing that I'm having a meltdown," says Spears, in a midriff-baring T-shirt and bebe hip-huggers slung low enough to reveal a hint of pink lace. "I don't get it." As for hard living, Spears happily agrees to a spot check of the G-rated contents of her purse: Juicy Fruit gum, Pinkie's mints, vanilla perfume and a tiny bottle of the herbal supplement St. John's wort. Says mom Lynne, 47: "My daughter is doing beautifully. She's never, ever been close to a breakdown." Yet Spears admits that her fresh-scrubbed role-model days are over. "I never wanted to hide who I was," she says, "but until about a year ago I was trying to fit an image and trying to be someone I wasn't."

Translation: Sugar-and-spice Britney is out, fire-and-ice Britney is in. In the past few months she has been photographed with a cigarette ("This may sound really cheesy, but I was holding it for a girlfriend"), flipping her middle finger at paparazzi who swarmed her car in Mexico ("We couldn't move. They were shaking it") and cozying up to Leonardo DiCaprio at the Playboy Mansion. ("He looks hot these days. But all I remember is seeing a bunch of naked girls and thinking, 'I got to get out of here.' ") And despite her famous 1999 remark that she intended to remain a virgin until her wedding day, she isn't lobbying for sainthood. "Who really cares if I've had sex?" she says. "It's nobody's business. Trust me, I'm not going to have a press conference to announce it. If I mess up, I'm human. If I have a drink or I'm with someone, I'm human. I'm no different than anyone else my age."

Brian Hiatt offers career advice for the pop goddess on the eve of her six-month break

Oh Britney, Britney, how were we supposed to know...that something isn't right? With Spears about to take a six-month break from the spotlight, we're not nearly ready to echo the New York Times Magazine's recent claim that the 20-year-old's ''star has fallen.'' But it's clear that she's reached an, um, crossroads in her career.

Spears remains one of the world's biggest stars, but her latest album, ''Britney,'' sold 3.8 million copies -- an impressive number for most artists, but less than half of what her last release moved. Meanwhile, her new single, the heavy breather ''Boys,'' has only reached No. 36 on Radio & Records' pop radio chart, and you're more likely to hear Brit's Pepsi ad on Top 40 radio than her actual music.

Plus, Spears has experienced a wave of negative publicity in recent months, beginning with her high-profile break-up with 'NSync's Justin Timberlake, and continuing on to two recent incidents in Mexico (she brandished her middle finger at some photogs and cut short a concert due to bad weather). Even news of her parents' divorce seems to somehow tarnish that glisteningly perfect image; her sunny sound seems at odds with her suddenly turbulent life.

At the same time, musical trends aren't moving in Spears' favor, as fans have embraced the likes of Pink and Avril Lavigne, whose more rock-leaning pop provides a tart alternative to Britney's sticky-sweet bubblegum. So, once she's back from her extended vacation, how can Britney Spears re-create herself for a new era? As always, we have some suggestions:

Justin Timberlake To Play VMAs, Says Solo Debut Is 'Very Me'

When Justin Timberlake's solo debut, Justified, drops November 12, it may bring an end to the days when he harmonized with his 'NSYNC brethren on songs written by Swedish songwriting teams.

Although Timberlake isn't permanently parting company with JC, Lance, Chris and Joey, his first crack at going it alone was nevertheless liberating. Free from his ties to Max Martin, Kristian Lundin and the like, whose songs dominated much of 'NSYNC's 1998 eponymous debut and 2000's No Strings Attached, Timberlake co-wrote all of Justified, including the LP's first single, "Like I Love You," a track co-written and produced by the Neptunes that is beginning to surface at radio stations nationwide.

"I don't want to say too much about it," Timberlake said of the album. "I want people to get what they get from it. It's definitely a new sound — not just from me, but period."

While only hearing "Like I Love You," which swaps 'NSYNC's upbeat pop trappings for a flow that's a little more smoky, sultry and downright sexy, must be a long-awaited joy for fans of the 'NSYNC maverick, seeing him do it live August 29 at the Video Music Awards will be twice as nice. The performance marks Timberlake's first-ever live solo performance.

The video for "Like I Love You" is scheduled to premiere September 9, according to a Jive Records spokesperson.

Timberlake's evolution from pop puppet to soul-baring songsmith has been a gradual one that began with No Strings Attached. Timberlake co-wrote just one tune on that album, "I'll Be Good for You," while groupmate JC Chasez assisted in the creation of three. It wasn't until 'NSYNC's latest offering, Celebrity, that Timberlake revealed a glimpse of his potential, taking partial credit for penning seven songs, including the hit single "Pop," and producing three.

By his own admission, Timberlake is content with the way tunes from his tablet sound, and he's proud of the image he presents with Justified.

"I'm very happy with it," he said. "It's very me, and that's all you can do as an artist is do what you think is an extension of you. You put down on paper or tape who you are. That's what being an artist is all about. And when it gets done, you don't look back at it and say, 'Oh, I could have done that better.' When Picasso looked at something, he didn't go back and touch it up with a paintbrush.

"I think it's cool. I hope everybody else does."

While the Neptunes and Timbaland produced most of the album, Brian McKnight, Mario Winans and P. Diddy also lent a hand in producing some songs. Despite logging studio time with Timberlake earlier this year, R&B singer Angie Stone's contributions won't appear on the album, according to a Jive spokesperson. Other details concerning Justified remain undisclosed.

Catch a lot more of Justin Timberlake in the MTV News special "Diary Presents: VMA Superstars," premiering August 24 at 1 p.m. ET.

"Saturday Night Live" comedian Jimmy Fallon will host the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, which will be broadcast live from New York's Radio City Music Hall at 8 p.m. ET/PT on August 29. For all the news on the big night, check out Video Music Awards headlines.

I'm new to this whole thing so bare with me. Before I started getting The Disney Channel, I loved watching MMC on the free previews they would have sometimes. Around 1998-1999, I got Disney and watched on a regular basis but I couldn't even catch a rerun of MMC. I totally fell in love with that show and would do anything to get it back on the air. All I have is an old tape of the Where Did Ya MMC 'Em First Marathon. I watch it so much that I know the entire tape by heart. I think if we all work together and contact Disney, they might put MMC back on for us. If anyone else loved MMC with as much passion as I did and still do, help me come up with some good ideas. <i>I found this while lurking around The Daxfiles...very, very interesting</i>

The Lost Boys: How a Pop Sensation Came Undone -- from the New York Times --

By NEIL STRAUSS

THE Backstreet Boys have sold more than 65 million albums around the world, a number that few pop acts have surpassed. In their prime, in the 90's, they were a pop juggernaut, breathing new life into MTV, the record business, children's radio, teen magazines and teenage purchasing power.

But along the way, they were surpassed by a very similar band with the same management, songwriting and production team: 'N Sync. As 'N Sync's star rose, the Backstreet Boys seemed to disappear. Music industry observers have offered scattered reasons: the Backstreet Boys lost their young audience when they tried to fashion a darker, more adult look; they alienated love-smitten fans when two group members married; they damaged their image when they admitted that the band member A. J. McLean had checked into rehab for alcohol abuse and depression.

But there is more to the story. Or more precisely, the Backstreet Boys' ups and downs are part of a larger story, one about the music industry today. It's about five young men put to work as pop puppets who develop minds and ideas of their own, then find out what can happen to long-term ambitions in a consolidating industry in which quarterly profits are crucial, professional relationships are not what they seem and pop groups are treated like disposable products.

The history of rock and roll is littered with broken bands and dashed hopes. But what distinguishes the Backstreet Boys' story is its scale, one involving deals worth as much as $100 million that the band members now say were a mistake, causing them to lose control of their careers.

"The business is over here," Kevin Richardson, at 29 the oldest group member, said recently, stretching his left hand out. "And the artistry," he continued, stretching out his right hand, "is over here."

Where the Boys Are

Find out what the guys of 'N Sync have been up to -- From appearing on the big screen to canoodling in a corner, we reveal what the ''Pop'' stars have REALLY been doing in their downtime by Lisa Costantini

It's not often that one hears the name ''Justin'' without it being followed by ''Lance,'' ''Chris,'' ''J.C.,'' and ''Joey.'' But with a much-deserved hiatus since the July 2001 release of their five-times platinum ''Celebrity,'' the guys have been keeping themselves busy sans bandmates. We thought you'd want to know what they're up to. Especially since the last time they were spotted together, Joey was being crushed by a Chili's cargo box.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

BORN Jan. 31, 1981, in Memphis, Tenn.

NOW HE'S... Timberlake is in the studio working on his debut solo album, set for a fall release on Jive. And when he's not working, Britney's ex is playing...with ''Ms. Jackson if you're nasty.'' Janet and Justin (who are collaborating on a single for Timberlake's record) were reportedly spotted locking lips in a Miami Beach club. Maybe People's Most Eligible Bachelor of 2002 will bring his new leading lady when he performs publicly for the first time without his band, Aug. 29 at the MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall (but don't bet on it). The group is up for three prizes, but Timberlake isn't having much luck lately -- he lost twice at the Teen Choice Awards. He was nominated for Choice Male Fashion Icon (Brad Pitt took the award) and Choice Male Hottie (Josh Hartnett walked away with that one).

HE SAYS ''Right now I want to enjoy life.'' Timberlake adds that he wrote his new songs to reflect his growing independence. ''I'm throwing it out there, seeing what happens. I'm testing the water, man.''

WE SAY As independent as this 21-year-old claims to be, he always seems to be surrounded by a bevy of beauties. This could work to the benefit of his upcoming record; in addition to Jackson, Alicia Keys and Jill Scott will reportedly lend their voices. What, no Britney?

POP STAR GOING SOLO IN THE HILLS

Justin Timberlake of the pop group 'N Sync has purchased a Hollywood Hills home in the low $8-million range.

The 21-year-old singer-songwriter, who was raised in Tennessee, also has a three-bedroom home in Orlando, Fla.

Singer Britney Spears, Timberlake's girlfriend of the past several years, bought a $3-million Westside home about 18 months ago, but the couple parted ways in March.

Timberlake's new home has five bedrooms and 8 1/2 bathrooms in about 12,000 square feet. On several acres behind gates, the Mediterranean-style house also has a theater, gym, guest house and tennis court.

The home has a cobblestone motor courtyard and covered parking for three vehicles. Timberlake has at least nine cars, including a Dodge Viper and a Porsche, plus five motorcycles. He has a game room with a pinball machine in his Florida home.

Timberlake, a member of 'N Sync for seven years, has been working on his first solo album.

He also has appeared as an actor, co-starring in the TV movie "Model Behavior" (2000) and doing voice work in 2001 for an episode of "The Simpsons," which featured cartoon likenesses of 'N Sync members.

He co-starred with Spears, now 20, on the Disney Channel's remake of "The Mickey Mouse Club" from 1993 through 1994. In 1998, he and Spears reunited when she appeared as an opening act for 'N Sync.

Formed in 1995, the group was already popular in Europe when it became a U.S. hit in 1998 with the singles "Tearing Up My Heart," "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" and "I Want You Back."

Since 1999, 'N Sync has received more than a dozen awards. This year, the band won the American Music Award for band, duo or group, and the People's Choice Award for favorite musical group or band.

From hitsdailydouble.com.

THAT'S NO JIVE: NSYNC member Justin Timberlake's deal with Jive is signed. His debut album, Out of the Blue, has a Nov. 12 release date and will be preceded by the single "Like I Love You," produced by the Neptunes, with vinyl 12s shipping now. That gives Jive the first solo albums from members of both NSYNC and Backstreet Boys, whose Nick Carter has his own solo bow on tap.

I saw Austin Powers this weekend. Anyone else see it?? I really didn't like it. I didn't laugh as much as I did at the other two AP movies. As usual Dr. Evil and Fat Bastard were riots, but everything else just paled in comparision. I felt like they just recycled the jokes from the previous movies.

You know it's sad b/c there are so many struggling, talented Black actresses in Hollywood who would have given a much better performance than Beyonce. She was awful. And I think the producers realized that too, b/c although she appeared in a lot of scenes, she didn't do much acting, just mostly reacting.

I also saw Signs. Good movie!!! There was this scary part (well it wasn't really scary, which is why I'm feeling stupid right about now) and I jumped and hurt to my shoulder. Ouch!!

It was no Sixth Sense, but still good flick.

Conspiracy Theory

Shocker! Christina Christian gets booted off ''Idol.'' But Jessica Shaw doesn't buy her dismissal when RJ and Nikki are both clearly inferior ''Idols''

Something is rotten in the state of Hollywood. How gullible do the producers of ''American Idol'' think we really are?

Does anyone really believe the sultry Christina Christian got booted off?

Yeah, right, like she got fewer votes than Nikki or RJ. I don't think so. Sorry.

I have conspiracy theories: Most of them (I'll refrain from specifics for fear of being sued) center around Christina commiting some kind of un-''Idol''-like behavior that would have shamed the show. She was going to be kicked out anyway, and the show couldn't lose two contestants in one week, so even though RJ or Nikki actually got the fewest votes, the producers just figured, ''Hey, let's pretend Christina was the loser and that will solve all our problems.''

Are we really to believe she was ''taken ill'' as that moron Ryan Seacrest told us? How odd that she was looking her most glorious in a robin's egg blue gown, singing her heart out just last night on live TV and all of a sudden she's in the hospital? Whatever.

The truth will come out eventually. The worst part of this whole situation? Now we have to wait two more weeks for both RJ and Nikki to be gone in order for the real competition to begin.

What do you think happened to Christina or do you think she simply got the fewest votes?

I really like Driven. I respect anyone follows their dreams regardless of the obstacles. Seeing their hard work and dedication makes me appreciate them more (except for Britney-her success seems like it came too easy).

On to Christina' Driven.

There's really not that much to comment on since I feel like I know her life story. But here are just some of my mindless thoughts. <i>(Mindless thoughts?? Does that even make sense?? Whatever.)</i>

So is Nikki the official spokesperson for MMC? Well, there was Jenn, but funny enough, she mostly talked about Joey.

There was competition between Christina and Britney?? Christina didn't like being in the multi-talented Britney's shadow. No way. Whew, good thing things aren't that way today. Oh, wait.

And the "Mother able to cry at the drop of a hat" award goes to Shelly Kearns, who dethroned Lynn Harless who was awarded that honor just a few weeks ago.

While I do believe, there was probably a lot truth to the whole <i>they were jealous of her, blah, blah, blah...</i>, I have a feeling Christina was a little (as her friend so eloquently stated) "confident" (aka, "stuck up"). So I don't feel <i>too</i> sorry for her.

One thing I notice from watching Driven and other shows like it, is that there are a lot of first grade teachers with great memories. How does one remember specific dialogue from almost twenty years ago. Of all the students that they've taught in the thirty or so years they've been teaching, they remember what this particular person said to them back on a cold winter's day in 1987. WTF??

I've been working with kids for the last 15 years and there have been so many children I've come into contact with that I couldn't possibly recall them all. I mean, if one of them held me up and gunpoint (and that's not that so far fetched considering the population I work with, LOL), I still wouldn't know 'em.

Anyway, I really enjoyed Christina's Driven and I do believe the best is yet to come for her.

Billboard.com

Pop queen Christina Aguilera is planning a return to the limelight at the end of the summer with a new single, "Let's Get Dirty." The track will arrive in mid-September via RCA, according to her official Web site. Co-written and co-produced by Aguilera and Rockwilder, the track features a guest appearance by rapper Redman.

Later this month Aguilera and Redman will shoot a video for the track in Los Angeles with Paul Hunter, who has directed clips for the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, and Eminem. Hunter will make his feature film directing debut next year with MGM's adaptation of the cult comic book "Bulletproof Monk," starring Chow Yun-Fat.

"Let's Get Dirty" is drawn from Aguilera's as-yet-untitled fourth RCA studio album. A spokesperson tells Billboard.com that although an official date has not yet been set, the label is targeting a late October release for the album. Tour plans are being formulated but nothing is yet finalized, according to the spokesperson.

The artist has reportedly collaborated with a host of luminaries on the new album, including Alicia Keys, former Jane's Addiction/Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro, and producers Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette, Aerosmith) and Linda Perry (Pink, Jennifer Love Hewitt).

Most recently, Aguilera has been heard not as a solo artist, but as part of collaborations. Along with Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink, she was part of the one-off quartet that took a cover of LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" to the top of Billboard's Hot 100. Recorded for Interscope's "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack, the single picked up the Grammy for best pop collaboration with vocals and MTV Video Music Awards trophies for best video and best video from a film, among other honors.

"Nobody Wants To Be Lonely," her duet with Ricky Martin, peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary airplay chart and No. 13 on The Billboard Hot 100. The track appeared on Martin's 2001 "Best Of" collection.

Aguilera's last solo release was 2000's "My Kind of Christmas," which topped Billboard's Top Holiday Albums tally and peaked at No. 28 on The Billboard 200. That set closely followed the release of her Spanish-language collection, "Mi Reflejo," which featured the single "Por Siempre Tu," a No. 6 hit on Bilboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart. The album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart and No. 27 on The Billboard 200, has sold 442,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Her 1999 self-titled debut set debuted on top of The Billboard 200. Featuring the Hot 100 chart-toppers "Genie in a Bottle" and "What a Girl Wants," that album has sold 7.9 million copies.

"Just Be Free," a collection of early tracks made when the artist was around 14 years old, was released last September by the Warlock label. Aguilera wrote in the liner notes that she "did not intend that the recordings would be widely released" and that she "tried to prevent [their] release for several years," perhaps contributing to the set's sluggish sales performance (114,000 copies to date).

Nelly Outsurfs 'NSYNC, Ja Rule, Usher At Teen Choice Awards

St. Louis rapper wins three surfboard-shaped awards, including Choice Song of the Summer.

By Corey Moss

UNIVERAL CITY, California — 'NSYNC, Ja Rule and Usher are close behind, but with teenagers Nelly is #1.

The St. Louis rapper took a ride out of Sunday's Teen Choice Awards with three awards, more than any other artist.

Two of Nelly's awards, Choice Single and Choice Hook Up, were for "Girlfriend," his remix collaboration with 'NSYNC. "Hot in Herre" nabbed Choice Song of the Summer.

'NSYNC's wins give the guys 10 Teen Choice Awards total, more than any other group. With two Choice Male Hottie awards under his belt, Justin Timberlake now has a record 12.

Timberlake's ex, Britney Spears, won her second consecutive Choice Female Hottie award and third consecutive Choice Female Artist award. However, as happened at the MTV Movie Awards, Mandy Moore's "A Walk to Remember" performance beat out her "Crossroads" role for breakout performance.

Ja Rule won Choice Male Artist and Choice R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap Single for "Ain't It Funny" with Jennifer Lopez, while Usher took home two surfboard trophies for Choice R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap Artist and Choice Love Song for "U Got It Bad."

"I guess I need to learn how to surf now," Usher said backstage of the awards, which are voted on by fans. "Seriously, this means everything. This is an opportunity to know if the fans really dig you."

As if it wasn't clear enough, fans definitely dig Ashanti. She ousted B2K, the Calling and others for Choice Breakout Artist.

Meanwhile, Kelly Osbourne won a breakout award of her own, for female TV star. "The Osbournes" nabbed Choice TV Reality Show. Kelly's brother, Jack, was up to his usual shenanigans at the ceremony, sporting the same "F--- MTV" tie he wore to the MTV Movie Awards earlier this summer.

Nelly and the St. Lunatics opened up the show, which also featured performances by BBMak and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

"What I just did is possibly the best thing I have ever felt in my whole life. I had a really good time," Hewitt said backstage, where she treated reporters to an encore performance.

Other stage highlights included Jamie Lynn Spears threatening to sell bathtub pictures of her heartthrob sister on eBay if Britney continued to interrupt her presentation, and a man in a spacesuit, a stand-in for Lance Bass, joining 'NSYNC for their acceptance speech (see "Bass Inks Space Deal As Russia's Partners Voice Concerns").

Before the awards, Pamela Anderson, Bernie Mac and dozens of others walked a red carpet that featured a rather interesting human backdrop — the dancer from Dirty Vegas' "Days Go By" video strutting his stuff.

Fox, which sponsors the Teen Choice Awards with Seventeen magazine, will air the ceremony August 19 at 8 p.m.

The strange, twisted tale of Britney Spears' Pistol-Packin' Papa
http://www.nola.com/rose/t-p/index.ssf?/livingstory/rose27_.html

Not so long ago, a visit to Britney Spears' childhood home in Kentwood might net you an introduction to Britney's mom and a souvenir poster. But four fans from New Orleans got a much darker greeting recently, as Spears' father Jamie, exiled by force ...

By Chris Rose
Staff writer/The Times-Picayune

Two Sundays ago, Beth Stevens and three of her friends did what hundreds -- if not thousands -- of Britney Spears fans do every year: They drove to her hometown of Kentwood, La., and its surrounding environs to soak up the landscape where the Princess of Pop was born and raised and still calls home.

They had read a story I wrote last month about how the town is all about Britney now, how her image and spirit dominate the local economy. And they had read a story in The Times-Picayune a few years ago about some Britney fans who knocked on the pop star's front door and were rewarded with signed posters.

"I don't know why, but I thought we'd kind of be welcomed if we showed up," said Erica, one of the four girls, three of whom requested that only their first names be used. "I certainly didn't expect Britney Spears' father to pull a gun on us."

The girls are all recent high school graduates -- two from Ursulines Academy, two from Mount Carmel Academy. Their trip Sunday afternoon was a summertime lark, something to do other than hang out at Lakeside Shopping Center once again. But the trip began as a disappointment and ended in sheer terror, and it's pretty safe to say their days of stalking celebrities are done. This is what happened:

Late on the afternoon of July 14, the four piled into a black Ford Excursion owned by Christy, one of the four. They hit Kentwood and stopped at a local gas station to ask for directions to the local landmarks. They left with directions to Nyla's Burger Basket -- Britney's favorite restaurant north of town -- and to the local Britney museum, and to her multi-million dollar mansion in the woods on the outskirts of town where she, her mother and her younger sister live, when they're not in L.A., which is most of the time.

"Everyone you ask will tell where she lives," Beth said. "It's not much of a secret up there."

But the trip was a bust. Nyla's and the Britney museum were both closed, and at the mansion the gates were locked and there were no signs of activity on the grounds. Disappointed but undaunted, the girls wrote notes to Britney and left them in her mailbox with their names and addresses. For good measure, they asked her for signed pictures.

While they idled outside the mansion gates, a fellow rode up on a four-wheeler and they got to chatting. "Have you met Britney?" they asked, excited. He said sure, and identified himself as Britney's mother's cousin, the girls say. The girls told him their adventure had been a drag, that they didn't get to see anything, and that's when the young man suggested they go check out the small house north of town where Britney grew up.

Her daddy still lives there, the guy said. They remembered that was the house that was pictured in The Times-Picayune a few years ago, the house where some fans got free posters.

They needed no more prompting. With directions provided by the stranger at the gate, they drove to the house north of town where Britney was raised.

It's a modest and unremarkable spread, a low brick rambler with plenty of space and trees around it, a white Mercedes convertible in the driveway and an LSU flag flying from the front entry. This is where Jamie Spears, Britney's father, lives.

The girls drove past the house and turned into a lot next door -- a gravel parking lot in front of what appears to be an abandoned business or industrial site. A sign on a huge Dumpster in the lot says "Rent Me" and has a phone number on it. There are no other visible signs in the lot -- nothing there or on the Spears' residential property that says "Keep Out" or "No Trespassing" or anything else that might suggest to uninvited visitors that they make themselves scarce.

Then again, it's the country; maybe that's not necessary.

As Christy tried to make a U-turn in the lot, the girls say, four large dogs bolted from the carport at the Spears home -- three German shepherds and a Rottweiler. They surrounded the car, barking and gnashing. Sufficiently freaked out by this turn of events, the girls said they froze.

They watched as a man cased them from the carport, then disappeared into the house. They waited, and soon after, the man came out of the front door and approached the car. They lowered one tinted window, on the passenger side, where Beth Stevens was sitting, and they immediately recognized him as Britney's father, but their hoped-for brush with fame turned nasty.

"He was really angry," Beth said. "He was really scary."

The girls say he leaned in and said: "May I ask why you are parked in my driveway?"

"I'm not parked here," Christy protested. "I'm trying to turn around, but the dogs . . ."

That was all he said. The girls say Spears glared at them in silence, checked them out, then slowly turned to walk back across his driveway toward his house. After about two steps, he reached into what were either boxer shorts or Bermuda shorts -- the girls differ on this detail. What nobody differs on is that he pulled out a large silver revolver and, walking very slowly back to his house without turning around, spun it around on his finger, over and over, like a gunslinger.

"I had never seen a gun pulled in anger before," said Erica. "And I never thought that if it happened to me it would be Britney Spears' dad."

"We were coming there because we love Britney Spears," Beth says. "To have this happen was a shock."

They had a camera with them but were afraid to take a picture of Spears. He disappeared into his house but they were still stuck in the lot because he had not called off the dogs and every time they inched forward or backward, the girls say, the dogs went nuts.

They took a picture of one of the German shepherds.

Spears re-emerged in the carport, the girls say. The dogs eventually withdrew to their master, and the girls sped off, stopping at a gas station by the interstate to call their parents.

"All of us (the parents) knew what they were doing," said Sharon Stevens, Beth's mom. "We thought this was very innocent. We even thought they would be welcomed. We certainly didn't expect them to be in danger. That's what blows my mind about all this."

The girls drove home. They waited a day. Then they called me.

Last Sunday, I drove up to Kentwood to see if I could find Jamie Spears and talk to him about it. Unnerved by the girls' story -- and by a angry phone call I had received from him last year when I was working on a different story that the newspaper never published, I brought a friend along to observe and listen.

When we pulled up to the Spears home, I was struck by how close it is to the street, how out in the open Jamie Spears lives, how different it is from where his family lives on the other side of town, fenced, gated and protected on a hilltop in the forest with a big "Beware of Dog" sign.

Spears was in the carport when I got there, where he had been when the girls arrived. This time, he was not alone, but in the company of at least a half-dozen men stripped to their waists in the summer heat, enjoying what appeared to be a shrimp boil or some similar activity. A couple of the dogs were there, too.

I parked in the lot next door -- where the girls said they had tried to turn around -- and walked halfway up his driveway. After being intercepted first by a friend and then by his brother, Jamie Spears finally approached me.

I apologized for interrupting his party, said I realized it was a bad time, but I gave him my card and asked if I could talk to him some time about what had happened between him and a car full of girls the previous Sunday.

"What about it?" he said.

"What happened?" I asked.

He looked me in the eyes. "They were in my driveway," he said.

"Where? Right here?" I asked, gesturing down at the driveway where we stood. "Or over there?" I asked, gesturing to my car, which was idling with the motor running and the door open, my friend watching from the passenger seat.

"Over there," he said, motioning toward my car in the vacant lot.

"They said you pulled a gun on them," I said.

"Yes sir, I did," he said. "I carry a gun with me. I keep it right here." He gestured to the carport. "And I'd have pulled one on you, too, if I didn't have company. If I'm alone and you come in my driveway, come on my property, that's what I'm going to do."

We regarded each other. "With the death threats we get, the thousands of people come here, yes sir, that's what I do."

He told me it was a big gun. And then he told me: "I don't do interviews."

As he turned to walk back to his carport, I said: "But they were teen-age girls."

He didn't answer. He didn't tell me to get off his property or go to hell, he just turned and walked back to his party.

I mulled all this over on the drive back to New Orleans. Sharon Stevens had told me: "When she (Beth) called us after the incident, I guess I should have told her to call the police, but I just wanted her home. I just wanted to see her."

So I called the police. Not to report a crime but to find out if there was a record of this sort of encounter going on with any frequency at the Spears residence, to find out if this was an isolated incident or standard operating procedure, because Spears left me with the distinct impression it was the latter.

Two calls to the Tangipahoa Sheriff's Office, in which I explained exactly why I was calling, went unreturned.

I also contacted Britney Spears' publicist in L.A., Lisa Kasteler. I informed her that I was going to write a story and was calling to see if Britney or anyone else wanted to weigh in on the situation.

"He did WHAT?" she said. Then: "She won't have any comment." She thanked me for calling and that was that.

Twenty minutes later, she called back. This time, she offered a completely different version of the story. She said the girls arrived late at night, parked in the driveway next to the house -- not in the lot next door -- and that they were honking the horn and carrying on, that the barking dogs woke Spears up and that the gun was visible, in plain sight, before he knew it was four teen-age girls in the car.

I told Kasteler I would be happy to include his side of the story, even though it conflicted in many respects with what Spears himself had told me. Then I met Wednesday afternoon with the girls, and they had just had their film developed from the trip to Kentwood and the photos clearly show the car was on the lot next door -- not in the driveway -- and that it was still light. They added that they were way too scared to honk the horn.

I told Kasteler this. She paused and said: "Do what you've got to do. Obviously, the family would prefer you not write this story."

A discussion ensued over the newsworthiness of this incident. She said there wasn't any. I told her if Jamie Spears is greeting Britney fans with a pistol, then he has moved himself out of his private domain and into the public eye.

"They were on his property," she said.

"Yes they were," I said.

There are many takes on this incident and one is that these nosy girls -- and everyone else -- ought to just mind their own business and not go poking around where people live.

The world of Britney Spears has changed a lot since 1999, when visitors were given signed posters in the driveway and reporters were invited in to look at the family photo album. That innocence is long gone.

Jamie's life and his family's lives are going in two different directions. They're in Hollywood, eating at Le Dome. He's in the carport, behind the Greenlaw Baptist Church, gathered with friends around the power tools, boiling shrimp.

The only thing they seem to have in common is all the late model Mercedes you see around the Spears clan.

There have been threats on Britney's life and safety, and probably on her little sister's, too, and their father has good cause for concern. When she was making her movie "Crossroads" in south Louisiana last year, tensions were high, security extreme and something ugly was afoot, though I never found out the exact nature of the perceived danger to the pop star. But it won't surprise anyone to hear that the world is full of kooks and crazies who will harm a famous person if they get the chance.

At the same time, throngs of Britney's fans have been coming to this house for more than three years, so you'd think there'd be some kind of protocol to deal with it -- one that doesn't involve guns and dogs.

A fence, maybe. Signs that ward away strangers. Certainly not a sign that says "Rent Me" and a phone number so that if you pulled in to write the number down you would be exactly where the girls were when the dogs surrounded them.

Picture some possibilities. What if, instead of calling their parents, these girls had called four knucklehead boyfriends who took exception to Spears' actions and decided to go up to the woods and try to open a can of whoop-ass on him?

What if there had been a guy with the girls, a guy with a gun of his own in his waistband? Or what if the gun went off when Spears started spinning it on is finger?

You don't need any more what-ifs. But here's a bit of advice: If you decide to visit Kentwood and its environs in the near future to do the Britney tour, cross her childhood home off your list.

Janet & Justin Join Forces - Musically
The fanclub has learned from our official sources that despite the rumors that have surfaced recently, Janet is not dating Justin from *Nsync but did in fact record a song with him for his upcoming solo album. There are no additional details on the song or its release to date.

I have recently been visiting this page and it seems pretty cool and interesting. Well I just wanted to know if Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson were actually together. I heard it a couple times but didn't think it was true. I've been a huge fan of both of these artists for a very long time as well as the Mouse Club.

Driven: Christina Aguilera is the tale of a little girl from Pittsburgh with a passion for music. She wanted only one thing: to share her voice with the world. Years later, Aguilera’s dreams came true when her wildly successful debut album went multi-platinum and she garnered a Grammy.

Driven: Christina Aguilera highlights include:

As a toddler, Christina was passionate about singing but also used her talent as a means to escape her father’s abuse.

Throughout elementary school, the other girls in Christina’s hometown of Rochester, PA displayed extreme jealousy of Christina, ridiculing her ability and her performances in talent shows.

Christina’s family left Rochester when threats were made and acts of vandalism resulted in their car tires being slashed.

At the age of eight, Christina competed on Star Search, and lost.

After wowing the crowd at a Pittsburgh charity banquet, 11 year old Christina landed offers to sing the national anthem for the Penguins, Pirates, and Steelers.

For two seasons, Christina appeared on The New Mickey Mouse Club which furthered her desire to record an album before she graduated from high school.

In 1994, several labels, including RCA, passed on the opportunity to sign Christina Aguilera. Undaunted, she left for Japan to jump-start her career on distant shores.

Within the four walls of her bathroom, Christina belted out the “high E above middle C” for a demo tape that ultimately became her star-turning vehicle… Christina was chosen to sing “Reflection” on the Mulan soundtrack, was simultaneously signed with RCA.

At 17, Christina packed up and moved to LA where she realized her dream and recorded her debut album. While Christina’s star continued to rise, tension back home among her peers was far from over. At the prom, “Genie in a Bottle” played and much to Christina’s dismay, everyone cleared the dance floor.

Some of the interview highlights include:

Shelly Kearns, mother. “Anybody who tried to befriend Christina was harassed by phone day and night until their parents said no.”

Jude Pohl, host of Jude Pohl’s Talent Showcase in Pittsburgh, says that other kids would drop out of the talent contest when they realized they would be competing against Christina. “It was almost not fair to send anybody against her. It was like sending the lamb to the slaughter.”

Noelle Bannister, a competitor on Jude Pohl’s Talent Showcase. “I knew she wasn’t – just your average 9 year old. She had the talent, and the drive, and the focus of someone who was going to do something.”

Penny Householder, Christina’s first grade teacher who tried to shelter her from the other children’s mockery. “She was just so much better than everybody else – head and shoulders above everybody. They were just, you know, normal children. And she had this wonderful talent.”

Walt Maddox, formerly of the 60’s doo-wop band The Marcels, who befriended 10 year-old Christina and fostered her talent as a singer. “Once you saw Christina and heard Christina, there was just no way you could ever forget the voice of this little kid”

Katie Heffner, childhood friend, “She had a lot of self confidence, which sometimes can be mistaken for arrogance.”

Marcie Craig Reilly, childhood friend, on Christina’s troubles with jealous peers, “I remember one time in gym class they were trying to kick balls at her, to deliberately try to hurt her. It was just a jealousy thing.”

Matt Casella, casting director for The New Mickey Mouse Club. “They’d call her the diva. They all sort of took a step back and went, oh boy, I’m gonna lose a few solo songs this season.”

Bob Jamieson, President of RCA who signed Christina to the label, “She’s a strong woman. And has opinions and she’ll express those opinions. This is not a woman that’s gonna sit in a corner and do what people tell her to do."

Some of the footage highlights include:

Never-before-seen footage of Christina’s 1989 audition for the Jude Pohl Talent Showcase.

Christina’s losing performance on Star Search.

Rare footage of Christina singing at a “Kids Against Drugs” benefit with Walt Maddox at age 11.

Singing "The National Anthem" for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pirates in 1992.

Performing on The New Mickey Mouse Club.

Singing “Reflection,” the song that won her international notoriety, in 1998
