OK, so ironically we were kinda talking about this this past week at the Poconos...

The presence of sooooo many well-known mythological characters and historic icons in the DH books is part of what makes these books so charming and unique. However, it's one thing to have them in the books as secondary characters, and it's another to altogether change certain things about them... I know, I know, Dan Brown twisted the known facts into world-wide-phenomenon... but for some reason, certain things in the first few pages of Velkan & Retta's story totally bugged me. I'll list them below and am curious about what you think. Am I being hypocritical? I know a lot of gals don't care at all about historical research, accuracies, etc. But I'm uber-picky about that stuff. Part of what gives romance a bad name, is the fact that so many of the books are silly fluff and lack any hint of intelligence. While I defend my favorite genre at every opportunity, I really wish the quality of writing were better in so many of the books... Anyway, not to get too off topic here, here's what bugged me in the above mentioned book:

1. Retta is Dracula's daughter... OK, I'll bite, this doesn't change a thing about Dracula
2. Velkan killed Dracula (that was his revenge-wish for becoming a dark-hunter) .... well, hmm... OK, maybe
3. Velkan gave the story to Stoker for the famous Brom Stoker's "Dracula" .... yeah, NO! this is too much
4. William Shakespear wrote "Romeo and Juliet" based on Velcan & Retta's story .... Whahhh???! That's totally overboard and not amusing

SO what do you think?

[> [> Would you believe I haven't got this yet? Ordering it Thurs.,but I agree that the "gave the story" part is a bit much. That last one just puzzles me-what's the purpose of that? I like Sherri's sense of humor,I truly do,but that's kinda odd.I couldn't resist coming in for the spoilers,Lina! *G* -- Boadicea, 19:25:41 10/16/06 Mon
