Subject: Ecuyer.....

Why do you think Ecuyer had contacted Nicholas’s father with the details of his marriage and will? Do you think he was trying to break them up, because she was a commoner? Or was he basically a good guy at heart?

[> You know, I really thought that Ecuyer was an all-around jerk. His sending word to Nicholas' father had nothing to do with Bethie & Nicholas' happiness in my mind, rather it was another way for him to show that he knew better than Nicholas what was best for him. He was interfering, not helping. If he wanted to help anyone, it was himself -- he probably thought Nicholas' father would thank him for giving him a warning, of sorts, about this common woman and his son's foolishness. -- Ana, 15:52:09 04/03/05 Sun

[> [> Yep, gotta go with Ana on this one. He was a totally unredeemable SUBhuman being and his motives were completely self-serving. I think the sign of a great author is to be able to write a TOTALLY horrible, wicked villian, & I think Ecuyer is one of the best since the one in the "Bastard" series by John Jakes. This was a great accomplishement by Pamela & I applaude her talent in this area -- Vic, 07:55:18 04/04/05 Mon

[> [> [> You know how sometimes some briliant authors can turn a seriously nasty character from one book into a hero in another??? I was thinking, that there could have been a verrrry small ( like the hint of a smoke before the spark that starts a fire...) chance that this guy could be redeemed, but then I got to the part were he ordered the dogs to be shot! well that and the fact that he was a historical figure. What a waste of oxygen, eh? -- Lina, 19:46:37 04/04/05 Mon

[> I agree with Ana and Vic on this one. I did not find any redeeming qualities in Ecuyer at all. I believe his thought was that Nicholas's family would have the same opinion of his involvement with Bethie that he did and that his letter would merit some sort of reward or would help to make Bethie and Nicholas unhappy. -- Danielle, 13:50:05 04/04/05 Mon

[> I HATE this guy! Ecuyer was a real person, and the stuff about shooting dogs and giving small pox infected blankets to the Indians is REAL. Egads! I tried to make him human, but I had a strong bias against him. And here's the scoop: Ecuyer wrote to Alec hoping to curry favor with a powerful man by telling him where his first-born son was. He was hoping Alec would do him a favor some day or be in his debt at the least. He doesn't care one whit for Nicholas, though he does respect him as a "soldier." In fact, Nicholas was not happy that Ecuyer did this because he wasn't necessarily ready to see his father again. And Ecuyer absolutely felt that Alec would be unhappy about Bethie.
