Subject: Bethie & Nicholas....

For a large majority of the novel Bethie and Nicholas were the only characters. Did it give you a sense of intimacy with them, or did the lack of secondary characters in the beginning bother you?

[> I LOVED that it was just the two of them, for the longest time.It really did make me get into the story better, put me "there" much faster than I would have, had there been secondary people.I think having them alone for so long was good,b/c I was able to focus on them w/out distractions. -- Boadicea, 10:11:58 04/03/05 Sun

[> I don't think they would have been able to achieve the level of trust with one another that they did if others were around. I really liked that it was just the two of them. Nicholas didn't need a sidekick, and the baby was there too so it really gave it a sense of family. -- Christa, 12:37:30 04/03/05 Sun

[> It was basic human drama, It had my complete attention! Remember watching Tom Hanks in Castaway? I mean he was the only person on the screen for most of the movie, but we watched... mesmerized! -- Lina, 02:47:19 04/04/05 Mon

[> I think that it HAD to be just them in the beginning to give them the feeling of closeness & to rely on each other to be able to build the kind of relationship they came to have!!! -- LindaW Linda, 20:41:13 04/04/05 Mon

[> I agree with the other ladies again. I believe that this was really the best way to establish their relationship and develop a good sense of intimacy. It did not bother me at all. -- Danielle, 22:44:30 04/05/05 Tue

[> As you all know from SWEET RELEASE and CARNAL GIFT, I love secondary characters. I was very worried about my ability to pull the first part of this story off. Two people alone for 10 chapters? (Well, I didn't know it would be 10 chapters because I don't plan a story out in that detail; I mostly just write and see what happens.) But something happened when I was writing this. Bethie and Nicholas were just so REAL to me. They were right there beside me, and their interaction and how they began to open up to one another and how they held their pain became so important for me to show. I'm SO GLAD none of you were bored out of your minds. LOL! -- P.C., 21:38:12 04/06/05 Wed

[> I'm not a huge fan of secondart characters. Sometimes I feel the only time they are added is to introduce the next book. I'd rather be spared and focus on the story I'm reading. N & Bs bonding was so personal. I love it. -- jaycee, 09:36:32 04/07/05 Thu

[> I loved that they were alone together. In fact, I prefer books where the h/h are alone together for a long period of time. And in Nicholas and Bethie's case, by being alone, they had no choice but to get to know each other. It was wonderful how he helped her with her chores...chopping wood (picturing that.. :) ) and in that way she became less and less afraid of him..... -- xina, 21:24:24 04/09/05 Sat
