Subject: I think rape is demeaning for anyone, but for a powerful man to lose control like that... I really felt that Nicholas' trauma came more from this and from witnessing Josiah's and Eben's deaths than it did from his being burned himself. The humiliation was unbearable, and it made him do things (like have sex with the other women) that he wouldn't have done and set him on a downward spiral emotionally -- hating himself, etc. So the trick in writing this is to still have an Alpha Male. How can you emasculate an Alpha Male and still have an Alpha that readers will respect? I'm not sure I pulled that off for everyone. But the fact that he was absolutely helpless when it happened (recovering from his burns and fever).... Who knows?
