Dr. Howward Holland, Dr. Frank Schaeffel and Dr. Adrian Glasser wanted to find out the effects of plus lenses and minus lenses on normal eyes in 1988.

They took five chickens and put plus lenses on them. Another five chickens were equipped with minus lenses. Yet a third group had a plus lens on one eye and a minus lens onthe other eye. A control group was maintained for standard scientific protocol.

* All eyes treated with plus lenses became consistently more positive (Hyperopic).
* Minus lenses produced more negative (myopic) refractions (focal states ) in all eyes.
* In a test of plus/minus lenses on left/right eyes, the eye with the plus lens moved in a positive direction. The eye with a minus lens moved in a negative direction.
* The control group did not change significantly in any direction.

Focal properties of lenses do profoundly affect the focal state of the young developing eye.
Translated into human terms, the minus lens caused nearsightedness, and the plus lens restored clear distant vision.
