A question to dress makers from a client
What is a reasonable expectation for having a very good idea of what you are getting before you get it. It is nerve racking to pay well over $1000 and not have a clear understanding of what it is going to look like. I hate to make unreasonable demands however, so any advice would be good before starting the process.

Every dressmaker is different, but I think its reasonable to expect a sketch and fabric swatches or discussion (depending on the dressmaker) 3-6 weeks before the completion date. The busier the dressmaker the more likely it is to take longer due to number of customers they're working with. (NT)good luckMonday, May 21, 10:07:26am

All dressmakers are different. They range from allowing zero input to sending you a complete computer graphic of what a finished design will look like. I feel it is unreasonable to expect a dressmaker to supply more than their standard. So, if you want certain things, you should make sure that is something the dressmaker does before you engage him/her. What seems reasonable to one person may not be to another, and that is why you should confirm the dressmakers policies before you choose.MHOMonday, May 21, 10:34:50am

Dressmakers all have a certain style (I can often say who made the dress just by looking at one), so you'll get at least some idea of what the dress will be like. But the best way is just to ask whether you can see a design. If you need to see a design beforehand for your peace of mind, and the DM doesn't give one, then that DM may not be for you.
