Subject: I have a question about dress sleeves

My daughter has a second-hand solo dress, which has sleeves that are stiffened at the cuff, presumably for shape. However, the stiffener has been flattened. When we first received the dress I tried putting a piece of cardboard inside the sleeves to regain the shape, but it just flattens again. My real question is, can I open up the sleeve and just take the stiffener out? More of should I, I think I see what seam I can open up to get to it. I'm just wondering if a more loose, flowing sleeve is OK these days. The other benefit will be to reduce stress on the cuff and embroidery at the 'fold' points in the stiffener. Thanks!

This may sound strange, but you could use template plastic cut in a 3-4" band the diameter of the cuff and hand tack it inside the sleeve cuff to help give it shape. Punch some small holes to stitch through and then you don't have to open up the seams-If you don't like it, you can take it out and then try the other route. (NT)dmMonday, July 07, 07:23:10pm

Try steaming the creased area and then "prop" them open. That has fixed bad bends at our house (NT)just a momMonday, July 07, 08:49:22pm

I think flowing sleeves appear to be arms moving (not a good thing) and could give a poor result that is undeserved (NT)I like neat stiff sleevesMonday, July 07, 10:32:40pm
