Okaym, so I'm new at this. I jJust made my first dress - petal dress out of beautiful micro-sequin stretch velvet from Joann's. I did not interface the bodice at the suggestion of my pattern-maker, because we wanted to achieve the "glove-like" fit of a stretch fabric. But now I've a problem: the weight of the skirt is pulling the bodice completely out of shape. It does not fit right at all. Any suggestions?

You're going to need a stable base for the skirt, its just too heavy for a stretch bodice. Have you considered make the dress two pieces? Either putting the skirt on an underbodice, or waist band? (NT)=/Friday, July 03, 05:18:54pm

Thinking about this a little more, there should be no reason you can't achieve a snug, attractive fit with a non-stretch bodice. Corsets, wedding dresses, and period costumes are all tight fitting and rarely stretchy...its definitely a lot of fitting work, but its doable. (NT)just a thoughtFriday, July 03, 05:20:42pm

I was thinking a two-piece might be the best solution at this point. Would an elastic waistband really just do the trick? I haven't looked closely at any two-pieces to see how they are done. (NT)lbrownFriday, July 03, 06:46:25pm

I'm in the process of making a dress using stretch velvet and decided on a two piece dress for this reason. I'm going to make a sleeveless cotton bodice to attach to the skirt and then the outer bodice will be a jacket with an open ended zip. I will use press studs to attach the jacket to the skirt so that it lines up perfectly. (NT)In my head it all looks great - reality might be a different story!Saturday, July 04, 03:48:56am

Hello thre. I have now made three senior dresses with stretch velvet for the skin tight look the girls go for. To stop the stretch problem at the waist, which you don't want, I iron on medium interfacing, a band of say 2" wide. I have not had a problem since. (NT)UK DMSaturday, July 04, 11:01:00am
