Subject: DD is ready for her first solo dress. She wants a velvet bodice. Dressmaker says you cannot embroider on velvet and I keep showing her pics of embroidered velvet bodices! Am I missing something? Thinking of finding a new dressmaker.

Your dressmaker is trying to say that *she* cannot embroider on velvet. Of course it is perfectly possible to embroider on velvet! You do need to know how.... She needs to learn how to do this first, or you will disappointed with her product. (NT)Move away from dm now...Thursday, August 07, 09:01:50am

The only type of velvet I hate working with is stretch. But even that can be embroidered on. You just have to stabilize it. Velvet is a beautiful fabric to work with. Make sure it is cotton velvet and not Italian silk velvet as that would crush. (maybe that's what she is thinking?). It's such a traditional fabric for ID dresses that I can't imagine an experienced DM not familiar with this. (NT)TriciaThursday, August 07, 09:11:54am

Velvet is easy to embroider with a computerised embroidering machine where the presser foot never touches the velvet, but much more difficult using a normal sewing machine. (NT)But can certainly be done!Thursday, August 07, 02:48:29pm

I am machine embroidering 16 school dresses at the moment. Would have turned away if teacher asked for applique with satin stitch. (NT)mmThursday, August 07, 03:53:46pm

I successfully used my small embroidery machine to embroider swirls on the bodice of my daughter's latest dress. Used the micro velvet and sticky back stabilizer so I didn't have to hoop the velvet. (NT)KathleenThursday, August 07, 05:43:45pm

Use cotton velvet. Absolutely no trouble embroidering on this once it's stabilized. (NT)MaryThursday, August 07, 06:45:24pm

I always use a "topper" when embroidering on velvet for smooth embroidery results. I've used thin plastic bags (such as dry cleaner bags), but find that water solible stablizer works beautifully. It tears away more cleanly, and if there are any untidy bits they disappear with a bit of water on a rag But if she doesn't want to/can't use velvet, find a different dressmaker (NT)or you'll both be dissatisfiedFriday, August 08, 08:48:27pm
