Subject: Agree with above, however, a dress having that much at the zipper makes me think that maybe it was originally bigger and has been altered. Possible that letting out at the zipper might work but it might leave noticeable lines where the stitching was.

If you still want to try it, you may want to see how you can cover up the stitch line. If it's dark velvet it won't show as much as it would in light colours.
