Subject: Those of us who used to design charged $40-60 for a full, non-exclusive 3-panel dress with cape and crown. Client got a clean copy, usually on 8x11" paper and the rest was up to them. (more...)

In reply to: S 's message, "Curious- how much would you pay a designer?" on Thursday, July 25, 04:26:57pm

You would think it would be more for all of the hard work and talent that was put into them. The hard work for me then was in the re-sizing & fitting to the pattern which was how it was done by all dressmakers. Now there is digitizing to add in there. Before I started designing, I bought all of mine from Susan Gowin of Feisdress and I am sure I never paid more than $45-50 for a solo dress design, and her work was always so beautifully rendered. If a client wanted a custom design that no one else would have, then it was closer to $150.

You were definitely undercharging for your work. The designers I know who sell one-off solo designs charge anywhere from $100 - $250 depending on how involved the design is and whether or not it involves selecting fabrics. (NT)Don't cheat yourself or work for nothingWednesday, July 31, 06:21:19am

I would think those old very detailed dress designs would take a lot more time than most of the designs today. (NT)Newer DMWednesday, July 31, 05:08:38pm
