Subject: So when a dancer trying on a dress, pulls her shoulders back in "dance stance" and then says "it's too tight when I pull my shoulders back!" what can be done? The dress seems to fit but the fabric is firm and unforgiving. All I could think was to let it out a bit through the bust at the underarms. Any other ideas?

thanks for any ideas

Is there any let out in the armhole? The upper chest is probably what is pulling. It could also be the sleeve cap (might need more fabric). Where are the stress lines when she puts her shoulders back? Those should lead you to the area the needs more room. (NT)--Friday, September 20, 05:40:27pm

Also check the armpit. If the armscye is too high, it will restrict movement and pull when they try to put their shoulders back. Sometimes it's easier to see what's going on if you take the sleeve out and have her put the dress on. I have seen a successful alteration where the dm added a wedge of fabric at the armsche edge of the bodice in a color that complimented the design. Thank you all so much for your thoughts! The sleeve cap had enough width, and there wasn't much I could do about the width of the bodice across the upper chest, but I ended up just letting out the bust, and ta da! Problem solved. I appreciate all your input. (NT)OPThursday, September 26, 01:59:26pm
