Which way is best?

We're putting together my DD's new dance costume and are working out the skirt. I've not seen any of the newer sequins skirts up close and have been reading with interest that there is no stiff panel underneath. Would it be best to cut the fabric in a strip on the bias and pleating/gathering or would cutting it as a circle skirt be a better way to go?

In my experience, a strip is easy in the beginning but there is a bunch of gathering and pleating in the hip area and I found it difficult to sew through when attaching the bodice. I would think moreso with sequins. If you have the luxury of the extra fabric, I would think the semi-circle would be less bulky. (NT)SDMMonday, July 16, 08:06:29am

I assure you, there is a stiff panel underneath. (NT)xMonday, July 16, 09:50:57am

Thank you for your help ladies. I think I'll do it the way I've done it in the past with the stiff panel, then I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel! Always so helpful here. (NT)At least then I know it will sit correctly.Monday, July 16, 10:24:26pm

I haven't seen these particular ones up close, but from past experience, Gavin and other BNDMs have not cut skirts on the bias, just straight -- I think that it is easier and less wasteful cutting it straight (NT)ATTuesday, July 17, 11:28:32pm
