Subject: Alteration possible?

I need 1.5 inches in the chest (measured just under arms) for a dress that I'm considering buying. There appears to be ample letout at the zipper. Is this a reasonable alteration? Any suggestions for experienced seamstresses in the Atlanta metro area? Thanks!

The correct way would be letting it out at the side seams not by the zipper (NT)hthThursday, August 10, 10:41:48am

Agreed with above. You always want to take out under the arms as you will also need space in the underarm area of the sleeve. Figure their are 2 side seams: 1.5" divided by 2 side sesams = .75". Each side seam is a front and a back. This means .75" divided 2 = .38" let out at each side seam. Is there at least a 1/2" at each seam allowance? If yes, then it should be doable. A gusset can always be added to the sleeve if there's not enough fabric in the sleeve to let it out. Alternatively, if there is gathering at the top of the sleeve to make a puff then that can be released to accommodate the increase in sleeve opening. (NT)xFriday, August 11, 09:51:21am
