For the amounts that you'd have to buy, be careful. Unless you're knocking out a massive amount of dresses it might not be as good as an investment as you think it'll be. I thought it would be as I was booking out a year in advance - hopping busy, up to sixty hours a week. But every time I decided that a certain fabric and/or color was something I'd use tons of, trends changed. When I started everything seemed to be jewel toned cotton velvets with jewel tone satin appliques. Then glitterball applique work. Then neon satin appliques. Then it went to dupioni silk & metallics. Then holographic lycra. Then fishscale sequins. Then satins with sheer overlays. Now microvelvet or stretch velvet & crystal satin. I've probably missed a few - I'd have to pull out my photo album to remember for sure. I bought much more than I really needed because it was "the" color & fabric, a great deal and just knew that I'd be using them. Right now it seems like black velvets are quite popular but in six months who knows? Dress prices have gone down dramatically too.
A couple of years ago a fairly new seamstress saw my fabric stash. She was just shocked at what we used to use, lol. To get a deal I had to buy 150 yards of stiffener at a time. What I've got left could now take me years to use up. I just gave away a ton that are no longer popular. It broke my heart because of the money I'd wasted but they were taking up so much room in my shop. Just my experience. Hopefully you'll have better luck and use every single yard you buy:)
