Subject: Boys Dance Pants

My grandson is only 4 and he's starting out in Irish Dancing. He's following in his Mama's steps since she was a dancer for almost 13 yrs.

When he competes in about a year the only pants we have are the toddler dress pants that he wears to church on Sunday. The problem we have is he's extremely petite like his Mama was at that age -- 33 in and 27 lbs. He has to wear suspenders w/ the pants because of the way they fit.

The dance teacher loves his outfit (pants, vest, shirt, tie) when he wore it to the school Feis and he was representing the family on handing out the Memorial Trophy for his Great Nana. This is when we decided to get the suspenders because they kept falling down. I finally had to pin them to his shirts.

I've checked out some ID boys sites and they want $95 for their Nov/PW custom pants.. Not bad if he was an older and bigger ... I do sew, but only quilts and so clothes are not my forte.. If I had someone take in his pants it would be "literaly" about 3 - 4 in for each leg... and the outcome wouldn't look very well.

Should we just continue using his store bought ones and hope that the suspenders don't break or find someone to make "tiny" dance pants?

Any suggestions?

We have seen designer pants on older guys and black pants with elastic waists for boys. Anything will work. Don't go to the expense if you don't have to. If you have money to spare, then order custom. My 16 yr old son had to special order black Wranglers for teams and solos because he was so tall and skinny. Just wore store bought until he got older. Some stores do carry small sizes in slims. (NT)Good luck to your new dancerThursday, September 15, 07:43:58am

You could use some velcro on the shirt and pants to keep them in the right place and keep the pants up. (NT)some times I sewThursday, September 15, 09:59:02am

Aww, I love the image of your tiny dancer. Store-bought is perfectly fine. Just watch to be sure the pockets don't gap (and sew or pin if necessary) (NT)good luck!Thursday, September 15, 09:59:58am

Thanks everyone... He loves dancing so far and where he got the mind to remember the steps is something else. He loves the beat of the music .. He says he wants to be a Champion & win loads of medals & trophies.. (NT)GrammyThursday, September 15, 02:48:05pm

I'm confused at your post. Are you saying you can't find a pair of boys pants in a (roughly) size 3? At his age and level, a regular pair of toddler/or size 4 pants would be fine. The 3-4" though part of your post confused me. (NT).Thursday, September 15, 07:09:06pm

Go with something off the rack at a store and not too pricy. They will be lovely on him. Don't invest time and money into something he will have outgrown in a few months and may only wear once or twice during that time. (NT)Good Luck to you both!Thursday, September 15, 07:37:53pm

If he is wearing a vest, he can certainly wear his suspenders underneith. My girls wore suspenders (or just pinned elastic straps) with their beginner skirts & vests. I don't know why more don't do it. If his shirt is still coming undone, I know a champ that tapes around the top of his pants along his shirt & covers with vest. (NT)go store bought as long as you canThursday, September 15, 08:22:40pm

He wears a size 3 due the leg length.. He's extremely skinny and they just fall right off.. In fact they fell down to his knees at the dance comp.. I had to find pins to fix the problem..If you took in his pants at the waist for store bought, you'll be taking it in about 3 to 4 in. He's only 27 lbs. All of his shorts & jeans have the adj waist bands. (NT)GrammyFriday, September 16, 01:01:52am

Why not try to take the waistband off and switch for elastic waistband? (NT)Just a thought.Friday, September 16, 06:11:33am

My girl is like this too and trying to fine jeans are a nightmare! She also doesn't out grow her clothes for ages. I know you say you can't sew but if you get a simplisity (can't spell) pattern with an elasticated waist, you will do just fine. If you have any questions when making, just ask us. But it is very simple to do, just take that leap of faith. Get cheap fabric or old curtains and try it out. (NT)Mum to skinny kidsTuesday, September 20, 07:25:10am

Agree with post above re size 4. As a mum of several skinny boys who are now grown up. This issue only gets worse as they grow i'm afraid. They will continue to grow up and not out for some time. Take all the suggestions here and use what works best with your child. For my son, he had a collection of belts. (NT)Another mum of skinny kidsWednesday, September 21, 04:31:08pm

Try to find suspenders that button on. There are loops at the end of each strap (one in back requiring 2 buttons sewn inside the waistband ) and one loop one each side of front (so -4 more buttons). The shirt stays inside and the suspenders don't come undone. (NT)Mom of 2 DSFriday, September 23, 07:28:48pm
