Subject: Betty Haines black velvet dress - White Christmas

I know this is a little off-topic, but every year I watch White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney, I say to myself "I gotta have that black dress." (You know the one from the Carousel Club scene.)

I have pulled all my vinatge mermaid dress patterns and found some black silk velvet in my stash. Do you suppose that there is a wire that supports the shaped neckline or just interfacing? I would also guess that the zipper is in a side seam and there is tulle or something that supports the bottom of the skirt.

Thanks and Happy New Year to all!

Lynn, there is some discussion on how [see inside]Sheila in CanadaThursday, December 27, 11:52:28am

Personally I think I'd do a mockup with buckrum or veline as a stablizer. Or a couple layers of that nice horsehair tailoring interfacing... Definitely bone the bodice (especially the center front up the point between the cups). Maybe try to find a vintage sewing/formal wear book? (NT)love that dress!Saturday, December 29, 12:04:38am
