Subject: Yardage?

I'm helping a teen see her first solo dress, just advising her a bit. I haven't made a dress since four-panels so soft skirts are not in my experience. She wants a single layer soft skirt (skater skirt?). From what I've seen in my research, we're layering a skirt over a stiffened framework. I'm having her do a skirt by gathering basically a 12 inch ruffle to a yoke.

She is 15 and about 5.4, average build.

How many yards of fabric should she have for her skirt? Estimates?

That should be "sew", not see (NT)Oh dearWednesday, January 23, 09:22:50pm

I ususally draw out my pattern/template and then take the bottom edge measurement and multiply by 1.5 to get the length for a gathered skirt. The back pieces are usually about one length of fabric (45") and the front piece is 1 length plus a partial. Right there you have 4 lengths of 12" (1 1/3 yards). That's for one layer and you can adjust if you are doing under layers or lining, etc (NT)ATThursday, January 24, 08:45:32am

Make sure you sample the gathers befor you cut the fancy skirt fabric. You may want more or less fullness. (NT)Good luckThursday, January 24, 09:32:17pm
